Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage: Perspectives from the Margins of Europe (Critical Heritages of Europe)
Par Kadri Koreinik, Laura Hodsdon, Valts Ernštreits, Sjoerd-Jeroen Moenandar. 2025
Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage draws upon an original, wide-ranging dataset to show that the dynamics and ethics of participation in…
European national minority cultures’ intangible cultural heritage (ICH) are more nuanced than has previously been articulated.Arguing for an approach to analysing ICH that reflects societal change in regions that are historically those of national minorities, contributions to the volume focus on three regions across four countries. This allows for comparative exploration of exemplar contexts that span a range of circumstances in which European national minority cultures thrive and strive for voice and recognition. It explores how a wide range of people engage with national minorities’ ICH and seeks a better understanding of the ethical and practical dimensions of this participation. It proposes a heritage literate ‘revoicing’ of ICH: to create socially positive pathways to resilient ICH, and in turn ensure ICH is an arena where these positive social relations are shaped as part of an evolving ecosystem into the future.Revoicing Intangible Cultural Heritage takes an interdisciplinary approach ideally placed to interrogate the interplay of different groups with ICH from multiple perspectives. This makes the book essential reading for academics and students working in heritage studies, sociolinguistics, cultural and event studies, sociology, creative practice, and cultural geography.

Green National Accounting in Theory and Practice: From GDP to Green GDP (Routledge Explorations in Environmental Economics)
Par Peter Birch Sørensen. 2025
This book explains the theoretical and empirical foundations for constructing a measure of a country’s Green GDP and how this…
measure relates to the conventional GDP.Opening with an overview of the academic literature on green national accounting, the first chapter sets up an analytical model of the interaction between a small open economy and the environment to derive a theoretically founded measure of the economy’s Green Net National Income (“Green GDP”). The book then illustrates how the theory can be applied in practice to produce a time series for the evolution of Denmark’s Green GDP and its various components (with an emphasis on the environment) over the last thirty years. As far as possible, the data used in the calculations were constructed in accordance with international statistical guidelines. Therefore, the careful explanation of the methodology which is outlined in the book can be applied to other countries using comparable data. This book will be of significant interest to scholars in the field of environmental economics and statisticians and practitioners working on green national accounting.
Debt Crises and Sovereign Risk in Africa (Routledge Studies in Development Economics)
Par Ndzalama Mathebula. 2025
This book examines the resurgence of debt crises in Africa following the Covid-19 pandemic. It deciphers the debt crisis phenomenon…
through the discourse of sovereign risk, which has been paid insufficient attention within the African context. It seeks to appreciate facets that continue to lead African states to a debt-default position. The book focuses on the pre-stages of default and debt default risks. It explores and investigates whether South Africa was and continues to be financially capable of servicing its International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan, granted in 2020 for the COVID-19 pandemic. While investigating how and why Ethiopia and Ghana have already defaulted on their post-pandemic loans from the IMF. It examines the idea of sovereign risk in Africa through a qualitative methodology and a case study research design, analyzing three countries borrowed from the IMF in 2020 or later, mainly prompted by the pandemic. The book distinguishes between African states that have not yet defaulted and those that have already defaulted on their debt servicing. Namely, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Ghana, two of which have already defaulted on their loan. The book also notes the resurgence of the IMF within the African continent while assessing the past narrative and impact of the international monetary system and how it has changed in the post-pandemic era. However, economic diversification has been noted as a prominent remedy that holds the potential of strengthening African economies and aiding their eradication of the debt crisis. The book is designed to appeal to numerous reading communities, namely scholars, researchers, advanced students and policymakers.

This book discusses the practice of free speech and its limitations – defamation and hate speech – in the context…
of Indonesia.Focusing on several legislations, mainly in the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) and the Information and Electronic Transaction Law (The ITE Law), the analysis centers on defamation and hate speech and how public interest defense is implemented in such limitations. The book discusses free speech in Indonesia through historical context and legal framework, both national and international. Detailed analyses of laws and case studies are provided, and the author examines key judicial decisions in defamation and hate speech cases that occurred in offline and online realms. The book demonstrates that Indonesia has ratified international human rights frameworks but that democracy in Indonesia has been declining in recent years, particularly due to the restrictions on free speech imposed by laws, which has resulted in a significant increase in cases involving free speech limitations.Offering a much-needed analysis of free speech and its implementation in Indonesia, this book will be of interest to academics studying Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Human Rights, Media Law, and Law in Asia.
This book proposes a novel transformational humanistic leadership approach applied to cultural heritage tourism, based on humanistic values of human…
dignity, creativity, and autonomy and supported by a distinctive leadership ethos, purpose, and guiding principles that promote the betterment of society.By reimagining how cultural heritage tourism leadership upholds human dignity through tour experiences that generate moments of grounding, reflection, understanding, and healing, humanistic leadership provides an ethical framework and strategic alignment to encourage human flourishing. In proposing a pluralistic leadership ethic that unites social, ecological, and technological influences, the impact of cultural heritage tourism on visitors’ human dignity is considered, culminating in transformational humanistic leadership that promotes tourism sustainability, authenticity, and adaptability. Practical leadership challenges are explored through case studies and leadership inquiries that reflect the cultural complexity of international heritage tourism, including Avebury Neolithic stone henge in the United Kingdom, Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths in Wales, the Museum of the Cherokee People in the United States, and the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory in Germany.Cultural heritage tourism leaders, public history and anthropology scholars, those interested in applied humanism in heritage contexts, and leadership ethicists will benefit from reflecting on human dignity as a central tenant of transformational humanistic leadership.
This book proposes using a ‘jury-centric approach’ for improving laws, practices, and procedures in jury trials. Courts assume that jurors…
in a criminal trial understand and apply the judge’s directions about the law. This assumption is based on jury verdicts and the courts’ observations of jurors and inferences about juror comprehension. Research reveals that the courts’ assumption about juror comprehension is fundamentally flawed. Addressing this problem is essential for fair trials. A jury-centric approach is evidence-informed and works within a fair trial framework. It asks what jurors need to understand the issues that they must determine. It also examines juror comprehension research and why judges and lawyers have often been sceptical about this research. The book illustrates and evaluates a jury-centric approach through three case studies involving structured decision-making aids, homicide laws, and misconceptions in sexual offence cases. The book proposes establishing an interdisciplinary Juries Advisory Council, drawing on judicial and legal expertise as well as expertise in jury research. The jury’s task is increasingly complicated. Reform is essential to help jurors understand their task and determine the issues on their legal and factual merits. The book will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers, policymakers, and students in the areas of Criminal Law, Courts, Human Rights Law, Psycholinguistics, and Organisational Psychology, and to judges and lawyers.
The Politics of Conformity in Japan (The University of Sheffield/Routledge Japanese Studies Series)
Par Yukiko Nishikawa. 2025
This book explores the concept of conformity pressure or dōchō atsuryoku (同調圧力) in Japanese society and unveil its effects on…
law, politics and business, and vice versa.Conformity pressure is explored from a unique perspective, expanding on traditional psychological analyses by highlighting how conformity pressure acts as a force which interacts not only with psychological dynamics but also with formal and informal economic, legal and political influences. This book also demonstrates how conformity pressure can be comprehended as a societal force identifiable through socio‑political analysis, in addition to traditional psychological analyses. Through such examinations, it reveals conformity pressure as not merely a by‑product of Japanese cultural uniqueness but also as an integral component of socio‑political dynamics crucial to understanding the essence of Japanese politics, law and society.Employing an interdisciplinary approach and incorporating aspects of economic, political, sociological and psychological analysis, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of politics and sociology, particularly Japanese, as well as social and political psychology.
Secondary English for Generation Alpha seeks to promote a humane, responsive and creative pedagogy for English that will develop and…
enrich understanding and enjoyment of language in all its forms (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and help students develop into successful members of their home and wider communities.Generation Alpha (children born between 2010 and 2025) are growing up amid unprecedented challenges – local, national and global – that threaten social justice. The authors of this book see subject English as one means of supporting Generation Alpha to meet these challenges and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit them for a changing world. Responding to tendencies to standardise and centralise curriculum, pedagogy and teacher education, the book explores the ways in which subject English can draw on local contexts and expertise in schools, universities and communities to address local needs and interests, demonstrating how what we learn locally can be relevant beyond. The chapters in this volume represent work being done, individually and collectively, in settings across England, by teacher educators in universities and other centres, alongside their partnership schools. By describing their own practice in English classrooms, the authors hope to empower others – in England, but also beyond – simultaneously producing both a broad and an in-depth exploration of the subject. Secondary English for Generation Alpha emerges from the world of initial teacher education, yet takes ideas from current research and makes them relevant to teachers and those interested in English teaching in schools in any context.

This book examines the judicial review systems in the four areas of Greater China – China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and…
Macau – and uncovers judicial review activities of the apex courts of each region. It provides a comparative assessment of judicial activism and deference. The development of modern judicial review is one of the key elements of the twentieth century’s legal heritage. By enforcing the principles of constitutionalism, the rule of law, and human rights protection, many courts have been vested with unprecedented powers and have played an essential role in supervising the exercise of government power through constitutional and administrative review. This work investigates the most up-to-date aspects of judicial review in Greater China and reflects on the modern theory regarding the judicialization of politics in different political regimes: democratic, authoritarian, and hybrid. The volume collects all substantive judicial review decisions delivered in the past twenty years by the four apex courts: the China’s Supreme People’s Court, the Taiwan Constitutional Court, the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong, and the Court of Final Appeal of Macau. This comprehensive dataset includes some 800 judicial review decisions, presenting a comprehensive resource of fundamental baseline data for evaluating judicial review in Greater China. The book will be an invaluable companion for scholars and researchers working in the areas of Comparative Public Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Constitutional Politics, and Asian Studies.
International Political Economy and the Global South: Perspectives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East
Par Bashir Saade, Giuliano Martiniello, Zaynab El Bernoussi, Adriana María Garriga-López. 2025
International Political Economy and the Global South provides students from both the Global South and the Global North a textbook…
that speaks to distinct concepts, categories and issues of International Political Economy (IPE) from a Southern and Northern perspective, while identifying how they differ. The primary goal is to provide an alternative or complementary reading of IPE derived from the experiences of the periphery. The textbook asks: how has the Global South responded to the demands of a global economy? What is the meaning of sovereignty to those who have experienced colonialism and imperialism? How can the Global South claim the “international” when the Global North sets its norms, institutions and practices? It opens with a standard introduction, offering an intellectual history of key IPE concepts, including state, firm, capital, power, labor, globalization and finance. Each subsequent chapter follows a similar structure: exploration of the problem; discussion of what may be missing from dominant understandings of the problem and/or how orthodox IPE may tell us something different about the problem compared to what is experienced in the Global South; and identification of alternative frameworks and perspectives.Aiming to de-Westernize and decentralize the production of knowledge, the textbook introduces students to the discipline and phenomenon of IPE with a genuinely global perspective.

Latin American Art at The Museum of Modern Art: The Power of the Canon (Routledge Research in Museum Studies)
Par Miriam M. Basilio Gaztambide. 2025
This book sheds light on an as-yet unstudied aspect of The Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) preeminent role in establishing…
the definition of the problematic term “Latin American art” in the United States from the 1930s to the present through its collection displays. In examining the shifting categorization of Latin American works according to stylistic and geographic taxonomies, we gain a greater understanding of the organization of the Museum’s collections as a whole during the 1940s and 1950s. This book is the first to document these institutional precedents, crucial for the understanding of the articulation of a Modernist canon and its contested legacy today. The MoMA is widely recognized as the preeminent institution that defined 20th-century art through its collection – shaping our understandings of the history of art, with its hierarchies and exclusions, as they sediment over time. MoMA’s holdings of art from Latin America shed light on a key period when the stylistic categories that have since come to be accepted by many today as the Modernist canon developed. MoMA’s collection displays suggest ways in which artists from areas of the world formerly excluded can be incorporated within today’s increasingly global museums. MoMA’s approach may be compared to initiatives adopted by several museums since the 2000s, creating geographically defined curatorial positions as a way to redress gaps in collecting art from Latin America and other areas of the world. In this book, author Miriam M. Basilio Gaztambide offers a closer study of the history of collection displays as a means to understand canon formation in modern art museums. This work will be of interest to those researching Latin American, American, modern, and contemporary art, and curatorial and museum studies.

The literature here includes references to the author’s own work as a practicing writer, as well as to that of other contemporary writers. It is an attempt to delink alternative sexuality from gender and establish it as an autonomous category. This book would be useful to the students, researchers and teachers of women and gender studies, sociology, history, economics, political science, and other interdisciplinary courses in social sciences.
