dass er einige Kurzgeschichten mit asiatischen Hintergrund gesammelt hatte, dazu erklärte ich ihm, dass ich auch welche hatte, ein anderer Freund schrieb mir eine E-Mail, dass er eine Kurzgeschichte über Pattaya schreiben wollte und einer meiner thailändischen Cousinen schickte mir ihr jüngstes Foto, das auf dem Buchcover. Es war, als ob mir jemand oder mehrere etwas sagen wollten. Die neunzehn Geschichten von neun Autoren in dieser Anthologie wurden mir innerhalb eines Monats zugesendet, sie sind genauso vielfältig wie ihre Schriftsteller. Die Vorgabe war, dass Asien oder ein Asiat in der Geschichte vorrangig vertreten sein sollte. Wir haben Geschichten aus Kambodscha, China, Laos, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, den USA und Vietnam, von asiatischen und nicht-asiatischen Autoren, die in Großbritannien, Malaysia, Thailand, den USA und Vietnam leben oder von da stammen. Manche der Schriftsteller sind bekannte Autoren, manche sind in anderen Bereichen bekannt, manche habe vorher schon viel geschrieben und auf dem traditionellen Weg veröffentlicht, Andere wandern auf dem Indie-Publishing-Pfad und für wieder Andere ist es das erste Mal, dass sie ihre Geschichten in gedruckter Form sehen werden. Sie können mehr über die jeweiligen Autoren erfahren, wenn Sie die Website, die sie nach ihren Geschichten zur Verfügung gestellt haben, besuchen. Ich empfehle Ihnen wärmstens, dies zu tun, denn was Sie über die Autoren herausfinden werden, wird Sie garantiert überraschen. Zum Schluss möchte ich allen Autoren, die dieses Buch möglich gemacht haben, danken, wir hoffen, dass Sie sich daran erfreuen und jedem Autor über seine Geschichte ein Feedback geben oder mir als Herausgeber über das ganze Buch eine Rückmeldung schreiben.

Die Geschichte eines schlichten Herzens ist ganz einfach die Erzählung eines unscheinbaren Lebens, das eines armen Mädchens vom Land, das fromm, dabei aber mystisch, hingebungsvoll ohne Überschwang und zart wie frisches Brot ist. Nacheinander liebt sie einen Mann, die Kinder ihrer Herrin, einen Neffen, einen alten Mann, den sie pflegt, und dann ihren Papagei; als der Papagei stirbt, lässt sie ihn ausstopfen, und als sie ihrerseits stirbt, verwechselt sie den Papagei mit dem Heiligen Geist. "Das ist keineswegs ironisch gemeint, wie Sie vielleicht vermuten, sondern im Gegenteil sehr ernst und sehr traurig. Paradise Lost, but principally and justly famous as one of the greatest classical scholars. To mark the event, the University of Toronto Press is issuing a special reprint of Alexander Dyce's edition of the Epistola (1691), the work which first brought Bentley fame, and which has long been out of print.This Latin exercise was called forth by one of those unhappy productions which, mediocre themselves, have had the ill luck to attract the inspection of genius. In the eighth or ninth century A.D., Joannes Malelas of Antioch, a Greek writer, attempted a chronological record of mankind and in it he had recourse to name or quote from classical works no longer extant. English scholars in the seventeenth century prepared a translation of the chronicle into Latin and an accompanying commentary; just before its publication, under the final editorship of John Mill, Bentley was given an opportunity to read proof-sheets and the result was the Epistola, a collection mainly of some twenty-five notes upon statements found in or topics suggested by Malelas. This extraordinary performance by a scholar of 29 moves from one topic to another over a wide range of ancient literature, explaining or correcting some sixty Greek and Latin authors. The notes are not so much a commentary on the old chronicler as a set of dazzling dissertations pegged upon a random set of appalling howlers, and they reveal prodigious information and gift of divination. Bentley's style in Latin is clear and spirited and seasoned with choice of quotation. The Epistola immediately secured for its writer the fame reserved for men of the rarest excellence and this classic among academic productions is still charged with power to instruct and inspire the scholarship of another era.
