Il y a d'abord Odette, la sensuelle maîtresse de Blewett, chez laquelle il avait eu la mauvaise idée de se réfugier après avoir initialement réussi à s'échapper de la prison. Il y a Amédée Bérubé, le chef de police de L'Anse-Pleureuse, où il est mieux connu sous le nom de Barrabas, nous apprendrons pourquoi. Il y a surtout Jean-Jacques Bouffard, l'aumônier, qui faut-il s'en étonner? est celui dont la conscience s'accommode le plus mal avec l'acte dont il est témoin et complice. Enfin, il y a une certaine rouquine, qui hésite entre l'architecture et la taxidermie, entre les hommes et les femmes, mais qui sait dérouler un récit avec une captivante désinvolture.
