A daughter cares for her dying mother in this intimate memoir of ovarian cancer, frank conversations, and finding peace through…
laughter and gratitude. In 2006, Jennifer Coken’s mother was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. She had a slim chance of living another five years, but she chose to spend her remaining days tap dancing through chemotherapy and loving her family and friends ferociously. In this witty and heartfelt memoir, Jennifer recounts how she found the strength to care for her mother and cope with her death while facing troubles in her own life. Challenging circumstances force us to face a harsh reality; so often we want to control life—and the truth is we can’t. This is a story of how personal transformation can come from tragedy if we are willing to find it. Above all, it is a wake-up call for anyone who needs the courage to have heartfelt conversations with the people they love right here, right now.Par Karen Babine. 2019
A &“lovely&” memoir of caring for a mother with cancer, reflecting on our appetites for food and for life (Minneapolis…
Star Tribune). When her mother is diagnosed with a rare cancer, Karen Babine—cook, collector of vintage cast iron, and fiercely devoted daughter, sister, and aunt—can&’t help but wonder: feed a fever, starve a cold, but what do we do for cancer? And so she commits to preparing her mother anything she will eat, a vegetarian diving into the unfamiliar world of bone broth and pot roast. In this series of mini-essays, Babine ponders the intimate connections between food, family, and illness. As she notes that her sister&’s unborn baby is the size of lemon while her mother&’s tumor is the size of a cabbage, she reflects on what draws us toward food metaphors to describe disease. What is the power of language, of naming, in a medical culture where patients are too often made invisible? How do we seek meaning where none is to be found—and can we create it from scratch? And how, Babine asks as she bakes cookies with her small niece and nephew, does a family create its own food culture across generations? Generous and bittersweet, All the Wild Hungers is an affecting chronicle of one family&’s experience of illness and of a writer's culinary attempt to make sense of the inexplicable. &“[Babine] continues to navigate her way through extraordinary challenges with ordinary comforts, finding poetry in the everyday. Reading this quiet book should provide the sort of balm for those in similar circumstances that writing it must have for the author.&”―Kirkus Reviews &“Profound…Anyone who has experienced a family member&’s struggle with cancer will be stabbed by recognition throughout this book…In the end, the overriding hunger referred to in this lovely book&’s title is the hunger for life.&”―Minneapolis Star TribuneToday Lie group theoretical approach to differential equations has been extended to new situations and has become applicable to the…

reinforcement-learning-based feedback control. The authors address a wide variety of systems including work on nonlinear, networked, multi-agent and multi-player systems. A concise description of classical reinforcement learning (RL), the basics of optimal control with dynamic programming and network control architectures, and a brief introduction to typical algorithms build the foundation for the remainder of the book. Extensive research on data-driven robust control for nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and multi-player systems follows. Data-driven optimal control of networked single- and multi-player systems leads readers into the development of novel RL algorithms with increased learning efficiency. The book concludes with a treatment of how these RL algorithms can achieve optimal synchronization policies for multi-agent systems with unknown model parameters and how game RL can solve problems of optimal operation in various process industries. Illustrative numerical examples and complex process control applications emphasize the realistic usefulness of the algorithms discussed. The combination of practical algorithms, theoretical analysis and comprehensive examples presented in Reinforcement Learning will interest researchers and practitioners studying or using optimal and adaptive control, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and operations research, whether advancing the theory or applying it in mineral-process, chemical-process, power-supply or other industries.Par Priti Malhotra. 2023

a rapid evolution in the past few years. For this reason, some reflections are necessary in order to scrutinize the next steps and anticipate the future developments. After a short survey of the historical background and in depth description of the state of the art, some examples are provided of current and future applications of the know-how in this discipline. This implies attracting readership of both experts in the field and neophytes. The former will test their own views with the one exposed in the book; the newcomers, instead, will learn both what has been done and what could be done with quantum crystallography.Par T. L. This book is devoted to the most important and urgent problems arising during the operation of underground gas storage facilities…
(UGS) and associated with the destruction of the reservoir and sand production into the wells. UGS facilities play a special role in ensuring high reliability of stable and guaranteed gas supplies to consumers. However, despite many years of experience in UGS well operation, there is still no sufficiently substantiated geomechanical model of reservoir failure and a mathematical description of the processes occurring in the reservoir-well system, taking into account the peculiarities of the mechanical behavior of reservoir rocks during cyclic injection and extraction of gas. As a result, there are no reliable criteria for establishing a rational regime for the operation of an UGS wells in conditions of a possible destruction of reservoir rocks. Further development of underground gas storage direction requires the introduction of innovative technologies that can be used both in the design of new UGS facilities and to extend the safe and efficient operation of existing underground gas storage facilities. To solve these problems, the most promising technologies, taking into account their efficiency, relatively low cost and environmental safety, are those based on the geomechanical approach. The book is addressed to specialists in the development and operation of underground gas storage facilities, as well as specialists in geomechanics of oil and gas fields. It can be useful for students and graduate students studying in the speciality "Development of oil and gas fields".Par Sughosh Madhav, Etikala Balaji, Golla Veeraswamy, Prasad Mannala. 2023

and initial boundary value problems for nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Most of the material is based on recent research carried out by the author and his collaborators. The book can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the results on decay of solutions to nonlinear parabolic equations and hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems are obtained, and a chapter is devoted to the global existence of small smooth solutions to fully nonlinear parabolic equations and quasilinear hyperbolic parabolic coupled systems. Applications of the results to nonlinear thermoelasticity and fluid dynamics are also shown. Some nonlinear parabolic equations and coupled systems arising from the study of phase transitions are investigated in the second part of the book. The global existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour of smooth solutions with arbitrary initial data are obtained. The final chapter is further devoted to related topics: multiplicity of equilibria and the existence of a global attractor, inertial manifold and inertial set.A knowledge of partial differential equations and Sobolev spaces is assumed. As an aid to the reader, the related concepts and results are collected and the relevant references given in the firstchapter. The work will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics and applied sciences.Par Peter J. Collings, John W. Goodby. 2020
