Par Alice Tarbuck. 2020
'These enchanting words make the world feel less broken' - Emma Mitchell, author of The Wild Remedy'Part-primer, part-chronicle; a fresh…
and personal account of a contemporary witch's year told with lucidity and verve' - Eley Williams, author of The Liar's Dictionary'Witches occupy a clear place in contemporary imagination. We can see them, emerging shadowy, from the corners of the past: mad, glamorous, difficult, strange. They haunt the footnotes of history - from medieval witches burning at the stake to the lurid glamour of the 1970s witchcraft revival. But they are moving out of history, too. Witches are back. They're feminist, independent, invested in self-care and care for the world. They are here, because they must be needed...'In A Spell in the Wild, Alice Tarbuck explores what it means to be a witch today. Where 'witch' was once a dangerous - and often deadly - accusation, it is now a proud self-definition. And as the world becomes ever more complicated and we face ecological, political, social and global health crises, witchcraft is experiencing a resurgence. Magic is back.Alice describes what she practises as 'intersectional, accessible' witchcraft - it's about the magic you can find in an overgrown snicket or a sixth floor stairwell; whatever your gender; whether you're able to climb a mountain or can't leave the house. Month by month, Alice walks us through everyday magic for extraordinary times.'A Spell in the Wild is a beautiful and intimate set of reflections on the persistence and necessity of magic, not just in our mythologies but our in daily accommodations with the changing natural world' - Paraic O'Donnell'The wise words in A Spell in the Wild offer solace for our hearts and homes in a changing world. Every reader will find themselves under her spell' - Nancy Campbell, author of The Library of IceFortunes in a Teacup

British Isles. Beginning with the late Middle Ages—from Ireland to Hampshire—hundreds of women were accused of spellcasting, wicked seduction, murder, and consorting with the devil. Most were fated for the gallows or the stake. What did it mean for these prisoners to stand accused? What were they really guilty of? And by whom were they persecuted? Drawing on a wealth of primary sources including trial documents, church and census records, and the original sensationalist pamphlets describing the crimes, historian Willow Winsham finds the startling answers to these questions. In the process, she resurrects the lives, deaths, and mysteries of eleven women subjected to history&’s most notable witch trials. From Irish &“sorceress&” Alice Kyteler who, in 1324 was the first accused witch on record, to Scottish psychic Helen Duncan who, in 1944, was the last woman imprisoned under Britain&’s Witchcraft Act of 1735. bodies. A consequence of this dissonance is an embodied performance of these ideals with the potential development of disordered eating practices, such as anorexia nervosa. This book develops a spirituality of anorexia by suggesting that these eating disorders are physical symptoms of the general repression of feminine nature in our culture. Furthermore, it puts forward Goddess feminism as a framework for a healing therapeutic model to address anorexia and more broadly, the "slender ideal" touted by society. The book focuses on the female body in contemporary society, specifically the development of anorexia nervosa, and what this expression communicates about female embodiment. Drawing upon the work of a variety of theorists, social commentators, liberation theologians and thealogians, it discusses the benefits of adopting female-focused myths, symbols and rituals, drawing upon the work of Marion Woodman and Naomi Goldenberg. Ultimately, it theorises a thealogical approach to anorexia aimed at displacing the damaging discourses that undermine women in the twenty-first century. Offering an alternative model of spirituality and embodiment for contemporary women, this book will be of keen interest to scholars of theology, religious studies, gender studies and psychology.
