Nursing Education provides a strategic guide and practical focus to curriculum planning and development. It will help all those involved…
in the provision of nursing education to understand the issues involved at the different stages of preparing a nursing curriculum which: - meets both professional and academic requirements; - integrates theory and practice; - enables students to achieve the skills and competencies they need for professional practice; - includes different methods of teaching and learning; - provides clear guidance for student selection and assessment. Balancing theoretical principles with practical application, and linked closely to the NMC's 2010 standards for pre-registration nursing, Jennifer Boore and Pat Deeny illustrate clearly and accessibly how to develop tailored education programmes so that nurse educators and clinicians in practice can enable their students to provide up-to-date and appropriate patient care.Spurred by ideals of individual liberty that took hold in the Western world in the late nineteenth century, psychiatrists and…
public officials sought to reinvent asylums as large-scale, totally designed institutions that offered a level of freedom and normality impossible in the outside world. This volume explores the “caged freedom” that this new psychiatric ethos represented by analyzing seven such buildings established in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy between the late 1890s and World War I.In the last two decades of the Habsburg Empire, architects of asylums began to abandon traditional corridor-based plans in favor of looser formations of connected villas, echoing through design the urban- and freedom-oriented impulse of the progressive architecture of the time. Leslie Topp considers the paradoxical position of designs that promoted an illusion of freedom even as they exercised careful social and spatial control over patients. In addition to discussing the physical and social aspects of these institutions, Topp shows how the commissioned buildings were symptomatic of larger cultural changes and of the modern asylum’s straining against its ideological anchorage in a premodern past of “unenlightened” restraint on human liberty.Working at the intersection of the history of architecture and the history of psychiatry, Freedom and the Cage broadens our understanding of the complexity and fluidity of modern architecture’s engagement with the state, with social and medical projects, and with mental health, psychiatry, and psychology.Par Jennifer Wallis. 2017
This book is open access under a CC BY 4. 0 license. This book explores how the body was investigated…
in the late nineteenth-century asylum in Britain. As more and more Victorian asylum doctors looked to the bodily fabric to reveal the 'truth' of mental disease, a whole host of techniques and technologies were brought to bear upon the patient's body. These practices encompassed the clinical and the pathological, from testing the patient's reflexes to dissecting the brain. Investigating the Body in the Victorian Asylum takes a unique approach to the topic, conducting a chapter-by-chapter dissection of the body. It considers how asylum doctors viewed and investigated the skin, muscles, bones, brain, and bodily fluids. The book demonstrates the importance of the body in nineteenth-century psychiatry as well as how the asylum functioned as a site of research, and will be of value to historians of psychiatry, the body, and scientific practice.Par Mary Larkin. 2013

The third edition of Ethics and Law for Australian Nurses develops an innovative practical framework for understanding the ethical and…
legal dimensions of nursing practice in Australia. Taking a 'relational' approach to practice, the text foregrounds the concepts of personhood, vulnerability and the nurse-patient relationship as the source of a nurse's moral and legal obligations. This approach is central to the book's discussion of key ethical and legal concepts throughout the text including consent and autonomy, negligence and liability, confidentiality and trust, and culturally safe practice. This edition has been thoroughly revised to include the latest research and methods, updated legislation and links to professional documentation, along with a new chapter on aged care. Student learning is supported by case studies, legal case extracts and learning exercises. A new instructor companion website features a curated suite of multimedia resources and extension questions.Par Robin E. Jensen. 2016
This book explores the arguments, appeals, and narratives that have defined the meaning of infertility in the modern history of…
the United States and Europe. Throughout the last century, the inability of women to conceive children has been explained by discrepant views: that women are individually culpable for their own reproductive health problems, or that they require the intervention of medical experts to correct abnormalities. Using doctor-patient correspondence, oral histories, and contemporaneous popular and scientific news coverage, Robin Jensen parses the often thin rhetorical divide between moralization and medicalization, revealing how dominating explanations for infertility have emerged from seemingly competing narratives. Her longitudinal account illustrates the ways in which old arguments and appeals do not disappear in the light of new information, but instead reemerge at subsequent, often seemingly disconnected moments to combine and contend with new assertions.Tracing the transformation of language surrounding infertility from “barrenness” to “(in)fertility,” this rhetorical analysis both explicates how language was and is used to establish the concept of infertility and shows the implications these rhetorical constructions continue to have for individuals and the societies in which they live.Par Charles Smith. 2017

weaknesses in the design and implementation of pharmaceutical price controls and investigating what can be done to fix the broken system In addition it examines the extent to which essential medicines are actually made affordable by price controls The book argues that companies make the pharmaceutical price control regime largely ineffective by coordinating to increase pre-regulation prices by diversifying horizontally away from the regulated markets and increasing prices in the unregulated markets by manipulating trade margins and by refusing to comply with the regulation because the penalties remains negligible The book draws on extensive empirical research involving India s 2013 Drug Price Control Order and widely-used medicines such as paracetamol and metformin to illustrate how firms have weakened regulation It argues that the regulatory regime can be strengthened by using systematic analysis of product- and region-level data in the Indian pharmaceutical industry and by screening for the strategies that firms currently employ to circumvent regulation In closing it discusses recent efforts to strengthen the implementation of price controls in India and expanding the scope of price controls to medical devicesPar Heiner Niemann, Christine Wrenzycki. 2018
