Alcohol: The Prevention Debate (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
Par Marcus Grant, Bruce Ritson. 1983
In the early 1980s, emphasis had shifted from the treatment of alcohol problems to their prevention. Yet no clear integrated…
policy yet existed about how alcohol problems could best be prevented. Many different strategies were put forward as solutions but some were in competition with each other, while some were actually incompatible. Originally published in 1983, what this book does is to draw together a cross section of these different and competing voices so as to give a sense of the quality and direction of the great alcohol debate at the time. After setting into context some of the basic questions to do with the prevention of alcohol problems, the authors knit together and juxtapose short contributions from a very wide variety of experts from around the world. Clinicians, educators, sociologists, advertisers, marketing men, economists, philosophers, geneticists and international civil servants present different points of view on health education, the media, advertising, trade, the law, the environment and on the ethical basis of the debate itself. The authors bravely attempt to pull some general sense out of this profusion of what the way ahead is likely to be. It should be noted that this reissue very much reflects the context of the times in which it was written and that the contributors were participating in a debate where differences of opinion were actively encouraged.Alcoholism Treatment in Transition (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
Par Griffith Edwards, Marcus Grant. 1980
Originally published in 1980, the purpose of this book was to aid a process of rethinking alcoholism treatment. Such a…
process was already underway in many parts of the world at the time. It was hoped that this volume would be useful in the modest role of abetting such a rethinking. Alcoholism treatment was definitely in transition, abandoning old certainties, searching for new syntheses and that is the position this book takes looking for an alternative understanding. The book is divided into six parts: Transition as Challenge; Does Treatment Work?; Towards Better Questions and Better Methodologies; Treatment System as Case For Study; Models in Transition; and Alcohol Agendas. The book also contains one chapter that discusses alcoholism treatment in a developing country, not often addressed at the time but acknowledgement that the problem is a global one.Alcohol and Aggression (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
Par Paul Brain. 1986
In the 1980s the relationship between alcohol and aggression and violence was a controversial one. Much of previous thinking had…
been based on anecdotal evidence. In contrast this book, originally published in 1986, is based upon recent scientific evidence from a broad range of studies from animal experimentation to clinical and social research. The initial chapters describe what aggression is, in terms of theories of animal behaviour, how alcohol influences neural and endocrine functions and behaviour and how problematic it often is to extrapolate from animal research to humans. Later chapters give critical reviews of attempts to relate alcohol intake to violence and crime. The book represents a major synthesis of work from many disciplines and will interest workers in animal behaviour, alcohol studies, psychopharmacology and social psychology. In the 1980s the study of alcoholism was in a period of rapid change, this book, originally published in 1985,…
identifies and explores the three most controversial contemporary issues: changes at the basic explanatory level in our concept of harmful drinking; the undermining of our confidence that drinking behaviour can be effectively modified in the traditional context of ‘treatment’; and the changes in our concept of the effective prevention of harmful drinking. The authors of the book came from a variety of backgrounds, but all were members of the New Directions in the Study of Alcohol Group. They broadly reject the disease concept of alcoholism, but, as this volume shows, there is still scope for vigorous debate and this book should have something of interest for all concerned with problems of alcoholism.Educating Young Drinkers (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
Par Gellisse Bagnall. 1991
Young people are regarded as vulnerable by the media – often exaggeratedly so. In the early 1990s they had become…
the focus of public concern regarding alcohol misuse. But attempts to educate teenagers into using alcohol sensibly have often been counterproductive. What kind of approach should alcohol education take to produce effective results? Originally published in 1991, Educating Young Drinkers outlines the reasons for the lack of success in previous experiments in alcohol education at the time. It focuses on an activity-based primary intervention with young people as a possible solution. With the active involvement of school teachers, Gellisse Bagnall had developed a relevant and pupil-oriented programme designed for easy classroom use. The evaluation of the results of this experiment demonstrated that non-didactic alcohol education can be made to work. In emphasizing the political and theoretical assumptions made in devising health education policies, Educating Young Drinkers was directly relevant to social scientists within alcohol and/or health education, as well as to policy makers. It would also be a valuable source of information for teachers and all those working with young people.Alcoholic Beverages (Routledge Library Editions: Alcohol and Alcoholism)
Par John Cavanagh, Frederick Clairmonte. 1985
For most of the post-war period, alcohol problems had been viewed primarily as individual problems. During the 1970s and 1980s,…
research highlighted the importance of larger socio-economic factors in shaping drinking levels, patterns and problems. However, it largely ignored a paramount force which shaped this larger socio-economic environment: the modern multinational corporation. The aim of this book, originally published in 1985, was to demonstrate, on the basis of historical analysis, that transnational corporate structures and marketing strategies exercised a powerful impact on the availability and consumption of alcoholic beverages in both developed and developing marketing economies. While the authors did not want to suggest a single causal relationship between corporate strategies and the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the implications of their work were of the greatest significance to public health throughout the world. The book was an indispensable work for those interested in public health, alcoholism, and multinational business at the time. Today it can be read in its historical context.Walking Free from the Trauma of Coercive, Cultic and Spiritual Abuse: A Workbook for Recovery and Growth

of secretive extremist communities who despise women and traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spider web of groups. It includes eye-opening interviews with former members of these communities, the academics studying this movement, and the men fighting back.Women's rights activist Laura Bates wrote this book as someone who has been the target of many hate-fueled misogynistic attacks online. At first, the vitriol seemed to be the work of a small handful of individual men... but over time, the volume and consistency of the attacks hinted at something bigger and more ominous. As Bates went undercover into the corners of the internet, she found an unseen, organized movement of thousands of anonymous men wishing violence (and worse) upon women. In the book, Bates explores:Extreme communities like incels, pick-up artists, MGTOW, Men's Rights Activists and moreThe hateful, toxic rhetoric used by these groupsHow this movement connects to other extremist movements like white supremacyHow young boys are targeted and slowly drawn inWhere this ideology shows up in our everyday lives in mainstream media, our playgrounds, and our governmentBy turns fascinating and horrifying, Men Who Hate Women is a broad, unflinching account of the deep current of loathing toward women and anti-feminism that underpins our society and is a must-read for parents, educators, and anyone who believes in equality for women.Praise for Men Who Hate Women:"Laura Bates is showing us the path to both intimate and global survival."—Gloria Steinem"Well-researched and meticulously documented, Bates's book on the power and danger of masculinity should be required reading for us all."—Library Journal"Men Who Hate Women has the power to spark social change."—Sunday TimesDiscarding popular Christian advice to use romance and sweetness to draw a wandering spouse back into a marriage, Dr. David…

Par Ian Cron. 2011
A touching memoir of life with an alcoholic father who secretly works with the CIA, a dark pilgrimage through the…
valley of depression and addiction, and finding a faith to redeem and a strength to forgive."This is a record of my life as I remember it—but more importantly, as I felt it."At the age of sixteen, Ian Morgan Cron was told by his mother that his father, a motion picture executive, worked with the CIA in Europe. This astonishing revelation, coupled with his father's dark struggle with alcoholism, upended the world of a teenager struggling to become a man.Born into a family of privilege and power, Ian's life is populated with colorful people and stories as his father takes the family on a wild roller-coaster ride through wealth and poverty and back again.Decades later, as he faced his own personal demons, Ian realized that the only way to find peace was to voyage back through a painful childhood marked by extremes—privilege and poverty, violence and tenderness, truth and deceit—that he&’d spent years trying to escape.A fast-paced, unique memoir about the power of forgiveness from the bestselling author of The Road Back to YouDetails his father&’s struggle with alcohol and Cron&’s own journey from addiction to twenty-three years of sobrietyEncouragement to see God&’s redemptive power through life&’s strugglesIn this surprisingly funny and forgiving memoir, Ian reminds us that no matter how different the pieces may be, in the end we are all cut from the same cloth, stitched by faith into an exquisite quilt of grace.Controversies in Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (Routledge Revivals)

Par Johannes Lange. 1931
First published in 1931, Crime as Destiny throws a beam of light across the darkness which enshrouds the study of…
the deeper causes of crime and the eternal debate between nature versus nurture. The author’s investigations led him to conclusions of the first importance to the sociologist and the psychologist. But the subject is wilder than it seems and by its direct bearing on the question of determinism will arouse the interest of the theologian and the student of philosophy as well. For the student of history, this research work will help trace the beginning of the logic of eugenics that will eventually take its nightmarish form under Hitler. The Self Psychology of Addiction and its Treatment: Narcissus in Wonderland
Par Harry Paul, Richard Ulman. 2006
In the time of Freud, the typical psychoanalytic patient was afflicted with neurotic disorders; however, the modern-day psychotherapy patient often…
suffers instead from a variety of addictive disorders. As the treatment of neurotic disorders based on unconscious conflicts cannot be applied to treatment of addictive disorders, psychoanalysis has been unable to keep pace with the changes in the type of patient seeking help. To address the shift and respond to contemporary patients’ needs, Ulman and Paul present a thorough discussion of addiction that studies and analyzes treatment options. Their honest and unique work provides new ideas that will help gain access to the fantasy worlds of addicted patients. The Self Psychology of Addiction and Its Treatment emphasizes clinical approaches in the treatment of challenging narcissistic patients struggling with the five major forms of addiction. Ulman and Paul focus on six specific case studies that are illustrative of the five forms of addiction. They use the representative subjects to develop a self psychological model that helps to answer the pertinent questions regarding the origins and pathway of addiction. This comprehensive book links addiction and trauma in an original manner that creates a greater understanding of addiction and its foundations than any clinical or theoretical model to date. The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and The Glory of Growing Up: A Memoir
Par Evanna Lynch. 2021
'Gradually, I began to feel this dawning awareness that womanhood was coming for me, that it was looming inevitably, and…
it didn't feel safe...' Evanna Lynch has long been viewed as a role model for people recovering from anorexia and the story of her casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films has reached almost mythic proportions. Here, in her fascinating new memoir, Evanna confronts all the complexities and contradictions within herself and reveals how she overcame a life-threatening eating disorder, began to conquer her self-hate and confronted her fear of leaving the neatness and safety of girlhood for the unpredictable journey of being a woman, all in the glare of the spotlight of international fame.Delving into the very heart of a woman's relationship with her own body, Evanna explores the pivotal moments and choices in her life that led her down the path of creativity and dreaming and away from the empty pursuit of perfection, and reaches towards acceptance of the wild, sensual and unpredictable reality of womanhood. This is a story of the tragedy and the glory of growing up, of mourning girlhood and stepping into the unknown, and how that act of courage is the most magical and creatively liberating thing a woman can do.Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things

The New York Times bestseller. &“Gripping . . . By turns fascinating and heartbreaking . . . Stuff invites readers to reevaluate their desire…
for things.&”—Boston Globe &“Amazing . . . utterly engrossing . . . Read it.&”—The Washington Post Book World What possesses someone to save every scrap of paper that&’s ever come into his home? What compulsions drive a person to sacrifice her marriage or career for an accumulation of seemingly useless things? Randy Frost and Gail Steketee were the first to study hoarding when they began their work a decade ago. They didn&’t expect that they would end up treating hundreds of patients and fielding thousands of calls from the families of hoarders. Their vivid case studies (reminiscent of Oliver Sacks) in Stuff show how you can identify a hoarder—piles on sofas and beds that make the furniture useless, houses that can be navigated only by following small paths called goat trails, vast piles of paper that the hoarders &“churn&” but never discard, even collections of animals and garbage—and illuminate the pull that possessions exert over all of us. Whether we&’re savers, collectors, or compulsive cleaners, very few of us are in fact free of the impulses that drive hoarders to extremes. &“Authoritative, haunting, and mysterious. It is also intensely, not to say compulsively readable.&”—Tracy Kidder, Pulitzer Prize-winning author &“Fascinating . . . a good mix of cultural and psychological theories on hoarding.&”—Newsweek &“Pioneering researchers offer a superb overview of a complex disorder that interferes with the lives of more than six-million Americans . . . An absorbing, gripping, important report.&”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and The Glory of Growing Up: A Memoir

fears about setting boundaries and step into a life that's overflowing with love, respect, and healthy relationships. We are people who love patterns, even if returning to these patterns continues to hurt us or those we love. The conflict arises when these behaviors are so deeply woven into early family systems that they later become part of our identities, clashing with who God has created and called us to be.As a child, Courtney Burg quickly learned that remaining loyal to others meant keeping secrets, even if these secrets were keeping those she cared for most sick. Her efforts to sustain the peace followed her into adulthood and slowly left her depleted, discouraged, and drowning in the chaos—until Courtney discovered that not only did God grant her permission to engage in relationships differently, but that he gave her specific instruction on how to do so.In Loyal to a Fault, Courtney Burg unpacks the various ways we cope with, enable, and participate in unhealthy relationships or generational trauma. Using personal examples and providing practical wisdom, Courtney helps you break free from codependent patterns by:Identifying the role you are playing in keeping the dysfunctional patterns going.Reframing what it means to love and remain loyal to those who matter most.Reminding you that boundary work is a biblical practice.Including end-of-chapter prompts for deeper introspection. It is possible to learn how to love others well without losing yourself along the way.
