base at Pearl Harbor, and laid waste to the American Far East Fleet. They sank four battleships, crippled three cruisers and three destroyers, and seriously damaged two other battleships. One hundred and sixty-four planes were destroyed and 2,403 servicemen and civilians were killed. All for the loss of twenty-nine Japanese aircraft and fifty-five men. Two days later, the British battleships Prince of Wales and Repulse, were sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers as they raced north to intercept an enemy invasion force heading for Malaya. In these two bold forays, the Japanese had successfully emasculated Allied naval power in the East. There now remained no big guns afloat anywhere in the Pacific and Indian oceans capable of opposing Admiral Yamamoto's ships.So began Japan's blitzkrieg. The Malay peninsular was rapidly overwhelmed, Hong Kong surrendered on Christmas Day, Manila went the same way on the 31st, and on 15 February 1942, in one of the most ignominious defeats in modern warfare, 85,000 British troops laid down their arms, and the vital base of Singapore was in Japanese hands. Thereafter, the rays of the Rising Sun spread ever outwards, overrunning island after island, until even Australia was threatened. famous squadron that catapulted him into history. Acting Pilot Officer John Freeborn reported to RAF Hornchurch on 29 October, 1938. John was posted from Flying Training School to join the already acclaimed 74 &“Tiger&” Squadron at eighteen years of age. At that time the Squadron was equipped with the Gloster Gauntlet. One of the first people John met when he arrived at the station was Bob Stanford Tuck of 65 squadron. On first meeting South African fighter ace Adolf &“Sailor&” Malan, John thought he seemed nice enough and soon learned that he was a determined leader, a fine flyer and an aggressive fighter pilot. &“He was definitely the best shot there was,&” John recalls. &“Without question Malan was a brilliant marksman, but I could out fly him and I bloody told him so too." John flew many operations with 74 Squadron in Spitfires during the early years of the war and the Battle of Britain; he was awarded the DFC for his efforts. During a brief respite for 74, John Freeborn was promoted to Flight Lieutenant and on 29 August he was given command of A Flight. In 1941, the first couple of months saw 74 Squadron conducting fighter Sweeps and Circus sorties over the French coast. On 17 February 1941, John Freeborn learned that he had been awarded a bar to his DFC. At that time, he had destroyed twelve enemy aircraft and damaged many more. are not entirely submerged by the scientific miracles and horrors which increasingly dominate our lives. High among such ideas must rank the recognition of women in more and more walks of life as equal partners with men, and in no area was the battle for recognition fought with greater determination then or more evident ultimate justification in the righteousness of their course then in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, later to become the WRAC. As Brigadier Bidwell puts it: At the heart of the question was not so much doubt about the ability or reliability of women, but an unformulated but powerful fear of the consequences of their intrusion in strength into an entity so exclusively and aggressively male as an army in the field'. He goes on to demonstrate how they managed not only to dispel that fear but but to replace it with admiration and respect which few could have dared to envisage at the outset. The Corps must be warmly congratulated upon their decision to ask Brigadier Bidwell to write their history. Of the 8,000 that were launched within the first 80 days, some 2,300 reached the London area where they caused more death and destruction to its population and buildings. These included special low-flying attacks on canals, factories, rocket sites, viaducts, and, of course, the attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. The standard set to serve in 617 Squadron is shown in the success of such operations. They were led firstly by Wing Commander Bruce Gibson, who set this standard, followed by Squadron Leader Mick Martin, and the incomparable Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire, who developed the accuracy of marking and bombing to a very high degree.
