Par Miriam K. Rosenthal. 1994
A new type of childhood is experienced these days by many children in industrial societies that provide child care services.…
The studies summarized in this book stem from a conceptual model based on an ecological approach to the study of development. The family day care system in Israel is presented as a "case study" for the discussion of issues derived from this conceptual model -- issues which are of central concern to the investigation of child care in any society. This book establishes how historical and socio-economic processes: *influence the values and goals set by the society for its children, and its social policy concerning child care service; *are interpreted by parents and early childhood educators; *relate to different definitions of "quality care." Unique in its integrative analysis of the daily experiences of infants and toddlers in family day care, this volume examines cultural and social policy issues, family background and parental beliefs, caregiver's background and beliefs, the nature of the child care environment, and the child's personal characteristics. Its "theoretical" and "applied" orientation is important to researchers interested in the study of out-of-home-care for young children, as well as educators, developmental psychologists, sociologists, and social workers interested in the study of environmental influences on the child development. The ecological model and the applied implications of the study are of special relevance to practitioners in the field of early childhood.Managing Depression, Growing Older: A guide for professionals and carers (Black Dog Ser.)

black dog of depression can still deliver a ferocious bite. Depression can strike at any age, and it may appear for the first time as we get older, as a result of life circumstances or our genetic makeup. While older people face the same kinds of mental health issues as younger people, they can find it more difficult to deal with them owing to the stressors which accumulate with age. There is also a high incidence of undiagnosed depression in older age, presenting extra challenges for carers. Managing Depression Growing Older offers a systematic guide to identifying depression in older people, supporting them at home or in an aged care setting, and the importance of diet, exercise and attitude in recovery. It is essential reading for anyone who works with the elderly.Aging in Place: Designing, Adapting, and Enhancing the Home Environment

Par Martha A John. 1992
Based on the belief that older people have good stories to tell, Story Writing in a Nursing Home was developed…
as part of a volunteer teaching service to a nursing home. Graduate students who were learning to teach this special population conducted story writing activities with older adults and found that even the frail elderly who are confined to nursing centers provided a unique perspective about events that emphasize the lasting verities in life. The idea of a patchwork was derived from one of the lessons taught and was suggested by one of the older participants who said, “We’re sort of like a patchwork quilt.” The information, memories, and humor the elderly see in situations is worth recording. In addition, Story Writing in a Nursing Home emphasizes the way to develop the mental stimulation that is so important for physical well being. This sensitive and insightful book provides a lesson plan outline and the type of content that was used as an example. It also provides a running commentary in the form of a diary that tells how to begin a teaching program for nursing center residents. Students and professionals interested in implementing a similar program can use these ideas for planning and for organizing the use of student help to better serve the population. Fascinating reading, this book includes stories by frail elderly people, lesson plans, tips on working with administrators in a nursing center, and reasons for providing instruction. Teachers, volunteers, librarians, gerontology/sociology students, and others concerned with the well-being of the elderly will refer often to this instructive volume.Pediatric Vitreoretinal Surgery

Par Claire Robson, Jen Marchbank, Gloria Gutman, Makaela Prentice. 2023
This book describes and analyzes the lived experience of elder abuse from the queer community. It discusses the experiences by…
transwomen, gay men and lesbians of financial abuse, physical and sexual abuse, homophobic abuse, and neglect within partner relationships, residential care, in home care, and religious organizations. Queer and trans elders have been described as ‘The Silent Generation’, since they have lived through times when their sexual and gender identities were criminalized and pathologized. The book shows that they are far more at risk to suffer abuse and neglect by those they should be able to trust, since they are more likely to have encountered all key risk factors, such as isolation, previous abuse and trauma, and mistrust of the health care system. Their vulnerability has been overlooked and this book addresses that gap. As such, this book provides a great resource to anyone working with elders, including medical professionals, care providers, police, counsellors, and policy makers.Ophthalmology Clerkship: A Guide for Senior Medical Students (Contemporary Surgical Clerkships)
