What Mama Taught Me
Par Tony Brown. 2003
Millions of viewers of Tony Brown's Journal, the longest-running series on PBS, know Tony Brown as an advocate for self-reliance…
and self-enrichment. Now, in his most personal book yet, he introduces us to the woman who brought him up and taught him the seven core values he lives by to this day: reality, knowledge, race, history, truth, patience, and love. What Mama Taught Me states that only by understanding one's place in the world can one become free in mind and spirit, which is the path to true success. Brown argues that by following other people's rules, we betray ourselves and our desires, resulting in a vicious cycle of disconnection, unhappiness, and spiritual death. Enhanced by the homespun storytelling he heard as a child, this is Brown's personal recipe for achievement, imparting values that provide a blueprint for reaching success and happiness -- on one's own terms. The Once and Future Celt

Par J. A. Musacchia. 2013
Images of America: Italians of Stark County focuses on Italian immigration into Stark County beginning in the late 1800s. At…
the time, Stark County's urban hub of Canton and the surrounding communities were in the middle of a thriving expansion driven by industry, transportation, and manufacturing. Along with this growth came the need for labor, with immigration filling many of those needs. Italians came to Stark County to work in the steel mills, in the coal mines, and on the railroad, as well as to start their own small businesses. Once established, Italian families began to replicate the community foundations from their native land, and in turn these foundations reinforced embedded values: family, food, religion, music, and freedom.Wallington's Polish Community
Par Marta Mestrovic Deyrup, Bozena Celina Urbankowski, Wojciech Siemaszkiewicz. 2013
The years after World War I heralded a large influx of Polish immigrants fleeing war-torn homelands in search of a…
better life. Drawn by the opportunity to work in the textile and manufacturing mills, Polish immigrants moved to Wallington, New Jersey, a newly incorporated borough in Bergen County. The Polish community of Wallington established themselves as local store owners and businessmen. They constructed churches and social club buildings; established restaurants, pubs, and grocery stores; and participated in the social life of their community. By the 1920s, Polish Americans began to dominate local politics; in 1929, the first Polish American mayor, Leo Strzelecki, was elected. Polish Americans became the majority in Wallington between 1935 and 1945, representing about 70 percent of the population. In 2012, Polish Americans comprise over 50 percent of Wallington's population. Through vintage photographs that capture the spiritual life of these people and the struggles they overcame, Wallington's Polish Community honors the Polish immigrants of the past while educating new generations.Defending the Spirit
Par Randall Robinson. 1998
Randall Robinson's Defending The Spirit is a personal account of his rise from poverty in the segregated south to a…
position as one of the most distinguished and outspoken political activists of our time. In 1977, Robinson founded TransAfrica, the first organization to lobby for the interests of African and Caribbean peoples. TransAfrica was instrumental in the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in South Africa and the reinstatement of President Aristide in Haiti. Robinson's thoughtful and provocative memoir paints a vivid picture of racism in the hallowed halls of Harvard, where he went to law school, as well as the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. He also recounts in fascinating detail his trips to troubled African and Caribbean nations; more than anyone else, he has raised awareness of the problems in those countries. Defending The Spirit also gives a devastating commentary on America's foreign policy endeavors in African and Caribbean nations, and an impassioned call to African-Americans for new leadership and activism to fight racism all over the world.Memories Eternal
Par Nicholas N. Chronis. 2015
An affirmative and inspirational, early 20th Century love story about an immigrant shepherd from a small village in the rugged…
mountains of Greece's Peloponnesian Peninsula and the lovely, first generation daughter of Polish immigrants born in Pennsylvania coal country. This book chronicles their humble births, the challenges of their youths, their disparate religious upbringings and, eventually, the extraordinary family hardships that brought them together in a marriage that flourished for nearly fifty years. This historical biography about the author's parents and family describes the unlikely story of how this pioneering interfaith couple - one a Greek Orthodox and the other a Roman Catholic - overcame incredible odds to include strong opposition to their marriage. This heartwarming actual memoir affirms the overarching power of love and how it and a virtuous dedication to family values underpinned their American Success Story.Polish Community of Chicopee, The
Par Stephen R. Jendrysik. 2005
The first group of Polish immigrants to come to Chicopee arrived in 1880. These Poles filled many of the manufacturing…
jobs in the city's two large textile mills. In less than 30 years from their arrival, this aggressive, self-assured group boasted more Polish-owned businesses than any other community in New England. The Polish Community of Chicopee chronicles an immigrant population that was fiercely dedicated to the ideals of free enterprise and democratic pluralism.

What is the mystery that Marlene hides and then reveals?A Swiss Community in Adams County
Par Naomi Eugene Lehman. 2001
In the mid-19th century, many Swiss families fled their homeland in order to avoid the rigid restrictions placed on religious…
and political beliefs. Many found solace in the little town of Berne, Indiana, and in the surrounding communities of Adams County. In 2002, Berne will celebrate 150 years of settlement and growth. In preparation, Naomi Lehman has compiled a unique visual history of these family-oriented communities, chronicling the history of the rich ancestral Swiss Emmenthaler culture that is still alive in the area today. Most of Adams County's early settlers hailed from Switzerland's capital of Bern, located in the Canton of Bern, and made the capital the namesake of their new home. The heavily forested and swampy land was cleared and tiled. Homes were constructed, churches flourished, and family businesses opened, some still existing today. Captured here in over 200 vintage images are the trials and triumphs of a classic Swiss community, including photographs of early farming families, industries and businesses, churches, and schools, blanketing not just Berne, but Geneva, Decatur, Linn Grove, and Monroe in Adams County, as well as Bluffton and Vera Cruz in neighboring Wells County.Carpe Diem

Bill Clifton: America's Bluegrass Ambassador to the World
Par Bill C Malone. 2016
The most atypical of bluegrass artists, Bill Clifton has enjoyed a long career as a recording artist, performer, and champion…
of old-time music. Bill C. Malone pens the story of Clifton's eclectic life and influential career. Born into a prominent Maryland family, Clifton connected with old-time music as a boy. Clifton made records around earning a Master's degree, fifteen years in the British folk scene, and stints in the Peace Corps and Marines. Yet that was just the beginning. Closely allied with the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Mike Seeger, and others, Clifton altered our very perceptions of the music--organizing one of the first outdoor bluegrass festivals, publishing a book of folk and gospel standards that became a cornerstone of the folk revival, and introducing both traditional and progressive bluegrass around the world. As Malone shows, Clifton clothed the music of working-class people in the vestments of romance, celebrating the log cabin as a refuge from modernism that rang with the timeless music of Appalachia. An entertaining account by an eminent music historian, Bill Clifton clarifies the myths and illuminates the paradoxes of an amazing musical life.#Tokyo45 Gli ultimi giorni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale

Par Bill Richardson. 2005
Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, may be the most charismatic figure in the Democratic Party today and one…
of its best natural politicians whose name isn't Bill Clinton. He is the man Colin Powell has called for advice, and the man George Stephanopoulos once called the Red Adair of diplomacy in homage to his ability to put out international fires. He has been nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize and is counted as one of our most knowledgeable politicians on Iraq and Saddam Hussein; on Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda; on North Korea; on energy policy; on Latin American affairs; on domestic politics; and on Hispanic America. Richardson's background as the son of an American businessman father and a Mexican mother has offered him an unusual starting point from which to seek a life in public service, but one of his most interesting roles has been that of global troubleshooter. What he has to say about how to negotiate to get what you want shows his true colors: He can be blunt, but charming; tough, but respectful; realistic, but hopeful. Through his work as a hostage negotiator sitting across the table from the likes of Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, and many others-as well as his toil on Capitol Hill, in the United Nations, and New Mexico's state government-he has learned the vital importance of preparation: know as much as possible about your adversary; test your partner's truthfulness; know how much you can concede; never lie and always be direct. Between Worlds is the surprising story of one of our most seasoned and captivating national figures.Carpe Diem

When I Was Cool
