The national bestsellerFrom one of our country&’s most prominent rabbis, an inspiring book about the power of community based on…
one of her most impactful sermons. In a time of loneliness and isolation, social rupture and alienation, what will it take to mend our broken hearts and rebuild our society?Sharon Brous—a leading American rabbi—makes the case that the spiritual work of our time, as instinctual as it is counter-cultural, is to find our way to one other in celebration, in sorrow, and in solidarity. To show up for each other in moments of joy and pain, vulnerability and possibility, to invest in relationships of shared purpose and build communities of care. Brous contends that it is through honoring our most basic human instinct-- the yearning for real connection-- that we reawaken our shared humanity and begin to heal. This kind of sacred presence is captured by the word amen, a powerful ancient idea that we affirm the fullness of one another&’s experience by demonstrating, in body and word: &“I see you. You are not alone.&” An acclaimed preacher and story-teller, Brous pairs heart-driven anecdotes from her experience building and pastoring to a leading-edge faith community over the past two decades with ancient Jewish wisdom and contemporary science. The result is a clarion call: the sense of belonging engendered by our genuine presence is not only a social and biological need, but a moral and spiritual necessity. With original insights and practical tools, The Amen Effect translates foundational ideas into simple practices that connect us to our better angels, offering a blueprint for a more meaningful life and a more connected and caring world.Par Barry M. introduces inventive ways to understand, manage, and transform the aftereffects of trauma. This dynamic workbook consists of carefully structured step-by-step art projects, augmented by tear-out images, and writing experiences. The book's first section, Developing Basic Tools For Managing Stress, is devoted to establishing a safe framework for trauma resolution. by false assumptions—making us dangerously mistrustful as a society and needlessly unhappy as individuals. The desire to fit in is one of the most powerful, least understood forces in society. Todd Rose believes that as human beings, we continually act against our own best interests because our brains misunderstand what others believe. A complicated set of illusions driven by conformity bias distorts how we see the world around us. From toilet paper shortages to kidneys that get thrown away rather than used for transplants; from racial segregation to the perceived &“electability&” of women in politics; from bottled water to &“cancel culture,&” we routinely copy others, lie about what we believe, cling to tribes, and silence people. The question is, Why do we keep believing the lies and hurting ourselves? Todd Rose proves that the answer is hard-wired in our DNA: our brains are more socially dependent than we realize or dare to accept. Most of us would rather be fully in sync with the social norms of our respective groups than be true to who we are. Using originally researched data, Collective Illusions shows us where we get things wrong and, just as important, how we can be authentic in forming opinions while valuing truth. Rose offers a counterintuitive yet empowering explanation for how we can bridge our inference gap, make decisions with a newfound clarity, and achieve fulfillment. **National Bestseller** **Wall Street Journal Bestseller** **Named Amazon's 2022 Best Book of the Year in Business, Leadership, and Science**Par Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, Adam Bulley. 2022
A spellbinding exploration of the human capacity to imagine the future Our ability to think about the future is one of…
the most powerful tools at our disposal. In The Invention of Tomorrow, cognitive scientists Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, and Adam Bulley argue that its emergence transformed humans from unremarkable primates to creatures that hold the destiny of the planet in their hands. Drawing on their own cutting-edge research, the authors break down the science of foresight, showing us where it comes from, how it works, and how it made our world. Journeying through biology, psychology, history, and culture, they show that thinking ahead is at the heart of human nature—even if we often get it terribly wrong. Incisive and expansive, The Invention of Tomorrow offers a fresh perspective on the human tale that shows how our species clawed its way to control the future.Par Julianne Cheek, Megan Aston. 2020
Using Postmodern and Poststructural Approaches in Applied Research introduces the complex theoretical approaches of postmodern and poststructural thought in ways…
that are accessible and understandable. The book begins by grounding our discussion with the foundational work of scholars who first wrote about postmodern and poststructural approaches. We then follow with examples of how scholars continue to use these approaches and theories today and apply them in different practice areas. Examples are provided from the author’s own research, teaching, and mentorship along with activities for the reader, to support them with their own research and application of postmodern and poststructural thought. Interviews and reflections are shared from students and researchers who have used postmodern and poststructural approaches in their own work. This book is for students and researchers who want to use postmodern and poststructural approaches to make a difference in practice areas where they work or have connections. It intends to inspire, excite, and support students, academics, researchers, and practitioners to use postmodern and poststructural concepts in their everyday practices.Par Louise Allen, Sharon Strouse, Oceana Sawyer, Dorit Netzer, Evie Lindemann, Ilana Rowe, Yon Walls, Robert Neimeyer, Sarah Vollmann, Deborah Mesibov, Elizabeth Coplan, Topaz Weis, Heather Stang, Catharine DeLong, Deborah Koff-Chapin, Becky Sternal, Steven 'Mud' Roues. 2024

BIG IDEA CLUB MUST-READ BOOK FOR APRIL 2023 A searing critique of modern wellness culture and how it stands in the way of true well-being that "will change the way you think about your health—in all the best ways.&” (Casey Gueren) &“It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle.&” You've probably heard this phrase from any number of people in the wellness space. But as Christy Harrison reveals in her latest book, wellness culture promotes a standard of health that is often both unattainable and deeply harmful. Many people with chronic illness understandably feel dismissed or abandoned by the healthcare system and find solace in alternative medicine, as Harrison once did. Yet the wellness industry promotes practices that often cause even more damage than the conventional approaches they&’re meant to replace. From the lack of pre-market safety testing on herbal and dietary supplements, to the unfounded claims made by many wellness influencers and functional-medicine providers, to the social-media algorithms driving users down rabbit holes of wellness mis- and disinformation, it can often feel like no one is looking out for us in the face of the $4.4 trillion global wellness industry. The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science. Weaving together history, memoir, reporting, and practical advice, Harrison illuminates the harms of wellness culture while re-imagining our society&’s relationship with well-being.Par Tobias Rose-Stockwell. 2023
Amazon's Best History Book of the Month for July 2023An invaluable guide to understanding how the internet has broken our…
brains—and what we can do to fix it. The original internet was not designed to make us upset, distracted, confused, and outraged. But something unexpected happened at the turn of the last decade, when a handful of small features were quietly launched at social media companies with little fanfare. Together, they triggered a cascading set of dramatic changes to how media, politics, and society itself operate—inadvertently creating an Outrage Machine we cannot ignore. Author, designer, and media researcher Tobias Rose-Stockwell shares the defining shifts caused by these technologies, and how they have ignited a society-wide crisis of trust. Drawing from cutting-edge research and vivid personal anecdotes, Rose-Stockwell illustrates how social media has bound us to an unprecedented system of public performance, training us to react rather than reflect, and attack rather than debate.Outrage Machine reveals the triggers and tactics used to exploit our anger, unpacking how these tools hack our deep tribal instincts and psychological vulnerabilities, and how they have become opportunistic platforms for authoritarians and a threat to democratic norms everywhere. But this book is not just about the problem. In a story spanning continents and generations, Rose-Stockwell explores how every new media technology disrupts our ability to make sense of the world, from the printing press to the telegraph, from radio to television. Outrage Machine situates social media within a historical cycle of confusion, violence, and emerging tolerance. Using clear language and powerful illustrations, this book reveals the magnitude of the challenges we face, while offering realistic solutions and a promising pathway out.Par Garry Hornby, Deborah Greaves. 2023
Par Laura E. This is the first volume to explore clinical and applied sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand, while also providing unique insights…
into the practice of sociology internationally. Drawing out the intersections between sociological research, public sociology and applied sociology, the chapters in this volume enrich the rapidly growing field of international clinical sociology. Aotearoa New Zealand presents an important case study in the development and practice of sociology: with a vibrant social scientific community and a significant diversity of scholars and practitioners, local research and practice highlight the country’s innovative and often unusual approaches to addressing social problems. This volume brings together a diversity of scholars and practitioners, from the country’s top sociologists to early career researchers, and provides a comprehensive and valuable exploration of sociology and its many practical applications in this unique context. It covers a wide range of key topics in the field, from the challenges of practicing a public sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand to the role of applied and clinical sociologists in government and consultancies. Contemporary social issues are explored as case studies, including practising sociological psychotherapy; indigenous applications of sociology and Māori language learning; and applying sociology within healthcare. This is a key addition to applied and clinical sociology literature. This book provides up-to-date guidance on how to recognize and reduce trauma-based dissociation. Through a therapist-guided approach, readers will increase…
their awareness of their own experiences of dissociation and develop strategies for reducing these responses, with an overall goal of feeling more connected within themselves and with others. Trauma-based dissociation usually first occurs during a very threatening situation from which there is no physical escape. The dissociative response happens automatically for protection outside of awareness, so the person doesn’t realize what they were doing. This protective response can happen again when other concerning situations occur, and eventually develop into an automatic response to perceived threats. Disconnecting to Survive: Understanding and Recovering from Trauma-based Dissociation is a guide for individuals who experience dissociation or wonder if they do, and for their family, friends, and professionals who want to help them. Several unique features of this book make it valuable as a therapeutic experience for trauma survivors as well as a useful resource for professionals. "Check-ins” throughout the book provide an in-the-moment experience of self-monitoring and pacing while reading. Frequent case examples enhance understanding of the ideas described and validate the experiences of readers who have persevered through traumatic life situations. A section at the end of each chapter provides opportunity to explore how the concepts apply to the reader. Readers also will learn about a three-phase model for determining their present needs and their readiness for different interventions based on their phase of trauma recovery. In addition to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, other types of interpersonal trauma are delineated, including race-based trauma, religious trauma, medical trauma, emotional neglect, military-related trauma, and mistreatment due to sexual orientation. In addition, a chapter is devoted to each of the important topics of dissociation in children and the relationship between trauma, dissociation, and psychosis.
