Items with ordered response categories are common in survey research, such as when respondents are asked how much they agree…
with certain statements. But how large are the differences between categories of response, and how well do they distinguish between respondents? This volume is the first to introduce the evaluation of rating scales to an audience of survey researchers. Evaluating Rating Scale Functioning for Survey Research provides researchers with an overview of rating scale analysis along with practical guidance on how to conduct such analyses with their own survey data. Author Stefanie A. Wind presents three categories of methods: Rasch models; non-Rasch Item Response Theory (IRT) models; and non-parametric models, together with practical examples. Tutorials, datasets, and software code (R and Facets) to accompany the book are available on the book’s website.Exploring Rating Scale Functioning for Survey Research (Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences)

BIG IDEA CLUB MUST-READ BOOK FOR APRIL 2023 A searing critique of modern wellness culture and how it stands in the way of true well-being that "will change the way you think about your health—in all the best ways.&” (Casey Gueren) &“It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle.&” You've probably heard this phrase from any number of people in the wellness space. But as Christy Harrison reveals in her latest book, wellness culture promotes a standard of health that is often both unattainable and deeply harmful. Many people with chronic illness understandably feel dismissed or abandoned by the healthcare system and find solace in alternative medicine, as Harrison once did. Yet the wellness industry promotes practices that often cause even more damage than the conventional approaches they&’re meant to replace. From the lack of pre-market safety testing on herbal and dietary supplements, to the unfounded claims made by many wellness influencers and functional-medicine providers, to the social-media algorithms driving users down rabbit holes of wellness mis- and disinformation, it can often feel like no one is looking out for us in the face of the $4.4 trillion global wellness industry. The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science. Weaving together history, memoir, reporting, and practical advice, Harrison illuminates the harms of wellness culture while re-imagining our society&’s relationship with well-being.Outrage Machine: How Tech Amplifies Discontent, Disrupts Democracy—And What We Can Do About It
Par Tobias Rose-Stockwell. 2023
Amazon's Best History Book of the Month for July 2023An invaluable guide to understanding how the internet has broken our…
brains—and what we can do to fix it. The original internet was not designed to make us upset, distracted, confused, and outraged. But something unexpected happened at the turn of the last decade, when a handful of small features were quietly launched at social media companies with little fanfare. Together, they triggered a cascading set of dramatic changes to how media, politics, and society itself operate—inadvertently creating an Outrage Machine we cannot ignore. Author, designer, and media researcher Tobias Rose-Stockwell shares the defining shifts caused by these technologies, and how they have ignited a society-wide crisis of trust. Drawing from cutting-edge research and vivid personal anecdotes, Rose-Stockwell illustrates how social media has bound us to an unprecedented system of public performance, training us to react rather than reflect, and attack rather than debate.Outrage Machine reveals the triggers and tactics used to exploit our anger, unpacking how these tools hack our deep tribal instincts and psychological vulnerabilities, and how they have become opportunistic platforms for authoritarians and a threat to democratic norms everywhere. But this book is not just about the problem. In a story spanning continents and generations, Rose-Stockwell explores how every new media technology disrupts our ability to make sense of the world, from the printing press to the telegraph, from radio to television. Outrage Machine situates social media within a historical cycle of confusion, violence, and emerging tolerance. Using clear language and powerful illustrations, this book reveals the magnitude of the challenges we face, while offering realistic solutions and a promising pathway out.Evidenzbasierte Lehrstrategien: Optimierung des Bildungserfolgs von Schülerinnen und Schülern
Par Garry Hornby, Deborah Greaves. 2023
Development Through The Lifespan

Par Walter S Lim. 2023
This book analyzes Shakespeare’s use of biblical allusions and evocation of doctrinal topics in Hamlet, Measure for Measure, The Winter’s Tale, Richard II, and The…
Merchant of Venice. It identifies references to theological and doctrinal commonplaces such as sin, grace, confession, damnation, and the Fall in these plays, affirming that Shakespeare’s literary imagination is very much influenced by his familiarity with the Bible and also with matters of church doctrine. This theological and doctrinal subject matter also derives its significance from genres as diverse as travel narratives, sermons, political treatises, and royal proclamations. This study looks at how Shakespeare’s deployment of religious topics interacts with ideas circulating via other cultural texts and genres in society. It also analyzes how religion enables Shakespeare’s engagement with cultural debates and political developments in England: absolutism and law; radical political theory; morality and law; and conceptions of nationhood.Applied and Clinical Sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand (Clinical Sociology: Research and Practice)
Par Zarine L. Rocha, Kathy L. Davidson. 2023
This is the first volume to explore clinical and applied sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand, while also providing unique insights…
into the practice of sociology internationally. Drawing out the intersections between sociological research, public sociology and applied sociology, the chapters in this volume enrich the rapidly growing field of international clinical sociology. Aotearoa New Zealand presents an important case study in the development and practice of sociology: with a vibrant social scientific community and a significant diversity of scholars and practitioners, local research and practice highlight the country’s innovative and often unusual approaches to addressing social problems. This volume brings together a diversity of scholars and practitioners, from the country’s top sociologists to early career researchers, and provides a comprehensive and valuable exploration of sociology and its many practical applications in this unique context. It covers a wide range of key topics in the field, from the challenges of practicing a public sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand to the role of applied and clinical sociologists in government and consultancies. Contemporary social issues are explored as case studies, including practising sociological psychotherapy; indigenous applications of sociology and Māori language learning; and applying sociology within healthcare. This is a key addition to applied and clinical sociology literature.Christian Mystics: 365 Readings and Meditations
Par Matthew Fox. 2011
As Matthew Fox notes, when an aging Albert Einstein was asked if he had any regrets, he replied, “I wish…
I had read more of the mystics earlier in my life.” The 365 writings in Christian Mystics represent a wide-ranging sampling of these readings for modern-day seekers of all faiths — or no faith. Fox is uniquely qualified to comment on these profound, sometimes startling, often denounced insights. In 1998, this longtime member of the Dominican Order was silenced by Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict, for his Creation Spirituality, an ecumenical teaching that embraces gender justice, social justice, and eco-justice. The daily readings he shares here speak to the sacredness of the earth, awe and gratitude, darkness and shadow, compassion and creativity, sacred sexuality, and peacemaking. The Clear Light: Spiritual Reflections and Meditations (An Eckhart Tolle Edition)
Par Steve Taylor. 2020
As Eckhart Tolle has written, poetry &“has been recognized since ancient times as a highly appropriate medium for the expression…
and transmission of spiritual truth.&” The Clear Light is Steve Taylor&’s latest contribution to this poetic tradition, offering short and powerful reflections as a guide to spiritual awakening and as experiential glimpses of the state of enlightenment itself. Taylor ranges widely, through subjects including &“Making the Human Race Whole,&” &“Freedom from the Past,&” and &“The Reality of Connection,&” always in clear and simple language. Best of all, he reminds us of the choices we always have when life feels chaotic and overwhelming: empathy, acceptance, and love. Soothing but also challenging, Taylor&’s words continually affirm the profound bedrock of peace and even joy in the present that is always available. The book&’s eponymous reflection says it best: There is nothing that can&’t be undone — no past injury that can&’t be healed no past mistake that can&’t be corrected — in the clear light of the present. Reading this book is a transformational spiritual experience in itself.Religion and the American Presidency (The Evolving American Presidency)
Par Mark J. Rozell, Gleaves Whitney. 2023
This book chronologically analyzes fourteen key US Presidents, from Washington to Biden, to highlight how religion has informed or influenced…
their politics and policies. For years, leading scholars have largely neglected religion in presidential studies. Yet, religion has played a significant role in a number of critical presidencies in US history. This volume reveals the deep religious side to such presidents as Truman, Eisenhower, and Reagan, among others, and the impact that faith had on their administrations. Now in its fourth edition, this work includes analysis of Joe Biden as the second Catholic president in United States history and provides a timely update to a key text in the study of religion and the presidency. This project offers an original contribution to the interpretation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council that constitute the…
most authoritative doctrinal teaching within the Catholic Church. The chapters in this volume, published during the 60th anniversary of the Council (2022-2025), discuss three types of stumbling blocks: ‘Stumbling Blocks for Ecumenism’, ‘Stumbling Blocks for Interfaith Dialogue,’ and ‘Stumbling Blocks for Church-world Relations’. Eight specialists of ecclesiology, comparative theology, intercultural theology, and theological ethics have each written chapters on a selected line of Vatican II that constitutes a ‘stumbling block’ or ‘hard saying’ for believers and theologians today. The views expressed in these chapters have been discussed in three response essays. The stumbling blocks have been selected from Lumen Gentium, Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate, and Gaudium et Spes. The selected lines discuss the difficulties the Catholic Church has with atheism and with the Eucharist as celebrated by Protestant ministers; how appreciation of other churches and religions goes hand in hand with defending the need of mission; and why the Council assigns different roles to priests and laity, making a distinction between the holiness of the Church and the sinfulness of its believers. This book provides up-to-date guidance on how to recognize and reduce trauma-based dissociation. Through a therapist-guided approach, readers will increase…
their awareness of their own experiences of dissociation and develop strategies for reducing these responses, with an overall goal of feeling more connected within themselves and with others. Trauma-based dissociation usually first occurs during a very threatening situation from which there is no physical escape. The dissociative response happens automatically for protection outside of awareness, so the person doesn’t realize what they were doing. This protective response can happen again when other concerning situations occur, and eventually develop into an automatic response to perceived threats. Disconnecting to Survive: Understanding and Recovering from Trauma-based Dissociation is a guide for individuals who experience dissociation or wonder if they do, and for their family, friends, and professionals who want to help them. Several unique features of this book make it valuable as a therapeutic experience for trauma survivors as well as a useful resource for professionals. "Check-ins” throughout the book provide an in-the-moment experience of self-monitoring and pacing while reading. Frequent case examples enhance understanding of the ideas described and validate the experiences of readers who have persevered through traumatic life situations. A section at the end of each chapter provides opportunity to explore how the concepts apply to the reader. Readers also will learn about a three-phase model for determining their present needs and their readiness for different interventions based on their phase of trauma recovery. In addition to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, other types of interpersonal trauma are delineated, including race-based trauma, religious trauma, medical trauma, emotional neglect, military-related trauma, and mistreatment due to sexual orientation. In addition, a chapter is devoted to each of the important topics of dissociation in children and the relationship between trauma, dissociation, and psychosis.Food Texturology: Measurement and Perception of Food Textural Properties
Par Andrew Rosenthal, Jianshe Chen. 2024
The concept behind this book is to take a holistic view of food texture, starting with the determination of food…
texture, its perception in the mouth, and its measurement by both sensory and instrumental methods, and to examine the relation between them. The book has been divided into four sections: Fundamentals, Sensory and Human Interactions, Instrumental Analysis, and Food Products. Essentially we cover the techniques used for measuring food texture, and then apply them to the different product groups. Readers of the first edition will notice the title has changed, with the adoption of the term texturology. In the long history of food texture research, texturology has been occasionally used in literature. The term texturology has not been widely accepted by texture researchers (texturologists) because of their concern over whether the theories and techniques are broad and strong enough to support texture research as a scientific discipline. During the 24 years since the publication of the first edition, the editors have observed vast developments in theories as well as the assessment methodology of food texture (both sensory and instrumental) and these have shaped our understanding. This second edition brings the science up to date by introducing topics not previously covered (e.g. psychophysics, tribology, oral processing, texture maps and special foods for dysphagia patients). It includes an exposé of the instruments to measure food texture, and also considers techniques for measuring consumer perception of food texture (in addition to the sensory properties). Additionally, it amends omissions from the first edition such as dairy products; fish; bakery products; and, sugar confectionery, asproduct groups. All in all it is expanded and updated in its coverage of food texturology, as a coherent scientific discipline.Angelika Kutz LL.M. beschreibt, wieso die Systemik mit der Systemische Haltung so heil- und wirksam ist für die nötigen Anpassungen…
