Design for Dementia: Living Well at Home
Par Bill Halsall, Michael Riley, Eef Hogervorst. 2024
Design for Dementia is written by an interdisciplinary team of professionals and academics whose aim is to present lessons learnt…
from the Dementia Demonstration House at the Building Research Establishment’s Innovation Park. Known as Chris and Sally’s House, the project represents a unique opportunity to show in practice what can be done to assist people living with dementia to continue to live at home and as part of the community with as much independence as possible. This book presents evidence based practical design guidance backed up by over 15 combined years of research by experienced professional designers.Beginning with an introduction which provides the background to the global dementia epidemic to allow readers to gain a better understanding of the issues they must consider, the book then discusses how good design principles, planning and construction standards can be used to effectively respond to the dementia crisis. The detailed findings from research using Chris and Sally’s House are presented and discussed, along with practical examples and success stories ranging from simple design features to the more complex use of sensors and automated ventilation. The hope is that readers can apply the lessons learnt from Chris and Sally’s House to successfully integrate solutions into the design of new or refurbished housing for the elderly and also that the tools and insights shared will inform the wider context of good housing design, as well as the spectrum of constraints and design standards which often apply. This book is important reading for architects, designers, engineers and project managers, but also anyone with an interest in learning about practical solutions to aid those with dementia to live well at home.Renal Denervation: Treatment and Device-Based Neuromodulation
Par Richard R. Heuser, Markus P. Schlaich, Dagmara Hering, Stefan C. Bertog. 2023
This extensively revised edition examines renal pathophysiology and the rationale for renal denervation for the management of hypertension, as well…
as possible long-term benefits and risks of this therapy. Renal denervation is a minimally invasive, endovascular catheter-based procedure that makes use of radiofrequency ablation to treat resistant hypertension, with studies showing a high degree of effectiveness. The devices involved in the continued evolution of this therapy are discussed and the book incorporates analyses of the development of the technique while evaluating its cost effectiveness and future applications. Renal Denervation: A New Approach to Treatment of Resistant Hypertension describes the technique in detail, its advances and its pitfalls. While it has been estimated that 50% of Western civilization has hypertension and approximately 20% of patients have resistant hypertension, hypertension remains the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality thus strengthening arguments to consider a wider range of potential solutions to manage these patients.Policy Framing Issues in the World of COVID-19
Par Beryl A. Radin. 2021
This book is a somewhat unusual depiction of a difficult policy issue. It transcends almost all boundaries because of its…
constant change and its movement across many different participants. It was found attached to a range of policy topics, methodologies and approaches. Some of these were familiar while others seemed new. Interest in this topic was exhibited across the globe and did not appear to be delivered along with a narrow political agenda. While researchers tended to re-examine classic public policy literatures (such as those dealing with implementation, federalism and budgeting) they did so by raising unusual issues. But this was not typical since analysts are likely to emphasize similarities rather than differences in settings.Posthumanism and Public Health
Par Posthumanism and Public Health. 2018
The intellectual and moral imperatives that underscore public health have sustained the idea that its fundamental scope is the study…
of human health, illness and suffering, and that these are self-evidently attributable to individuals and groups of people. This edited collection explores to what extent a shift towards more posthuman perspectives – where the status of the human as the obvious focus for our attention is de-stabilised – might catalyse complimentary or alternative accounts of common topics in public health. The collection argues that through this posthuman approach, standard categories such as health, illness and even the body might be re-conceived as interactions between different entities – between people, other living things, material objects and the environment – rather than as inherently human properties. By taking into greater account non-humans and relationships between humans and non-humans, this approach offers a re-casting of traditional topics in public health and opens new opportunities for examining these. In so doing, the book raises key questions about researching ‘health’; about considering the extent to which it may be productive to think about health as it interests not only human lives; and what happens to our moral and ethical commitments if we no longer put humans first. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Public Health.Health, Disability and the Capability Approach
Par Sophie Mitra and Jennifer Prah Ruger. 2018
This book focuses on two areas of substantial and growing importance to the human development and capability approach: health and…
disability. The research on disability, health and the capability approach has been diverse in the topics it covers, and the conceptual frameworks and methodologies it uses, beginning over a decade and a half ago in health and more than a decade ago in disability. This book shares a set of contributions in these two areas: the first set of chapters focusing on disability; and the second set focusing on health and the health capability paradigm (HCP), in particular. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities.Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning in Social Work: Current Issues and Future Direction
Par Paul A. Kurzman. 2018
This book focuses on the present development, gradual evolution, and current status of social work continuing education. The contributors demonstrate…
the rapidly growing importance of continuing education (CE) in the social work profession; look closely at present trends; and address the emerging pedagogical issues that will likely frame the future. The rapid expansion of CE offerings is partly stimulated by CE now being a licensure renewal requirement across the United States, which quite clearly is having a central impact in expanding the demand for CE education and lifelong learning for professional practice.Relevant for social work students, graduates and educators, in the USA and abroad, this book represents an authoritative statement, authored by widely recognized educators and practitioners who are on the forefront of continuing education and lifelong learning. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Teaching in Social Work.Heart Solution for Women: A Proven Program to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

such that surgical resection either is technically impossible or would lead to an unacceptable functional or cosmetic outcome. These skin cancers present a complex problem that requires the input of multiple specialties to delineate the best management plan. National guidelines utilize the best available data to guide management decisions. However, there is considerable leeway within the guidelines, enabling the ultimate care decision to be molded to best fit each individual patient. This book aims to provide instructional examples of patient cases where the input of the multidisciplinary team is critical in providing the most suitable care plan for the patient.CONTENTS: Melanoma * Squamous Cell Carcinoma * Basal Cell Carcinoma * Cutaneous Lymphoma * Kaposi’s Sarcoma * Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans * Merkel Cell Carcinoma * Rare Cancer PresentationsAdvancement of Melatonin Research in Plants: Multi-Faceted Role in Regulating Development and Stress Protection
Par Aryadeep Roychoudhury. 2024
Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a widely studied biomolecule, and its function has been investigated in bacteria, mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish…
and plants. Melatonin research in plants the last five years has attained an exponential growth phase and the number of publications related to phytomelatonin has significantly increased in present times. All this research is directed towards establishing multifarious roles of melatonin in plants, including the promotion of seed germination and seedling growth, influencing plant development and senescence, alteration of flowering and fruiting time and grain yield, modulating circadian rhythms, improving resistance against biotic stress as well as tolerance to abiotic stress, reducing oxidative stress, and stimulating plant immune response. However, to date, an exhaustive book, solely and exclusively dedicated to melatonin research on various aspects of plant biology, has not been published by any renowned publisher or is available in the market. Keeping all these facts in mind, this book aims to compile the most recent developments in the arena of melatonin-mediated regulation of plant physiology under optimal and sub-optimal conditions. This book will initiate and introduce the readers to the state-of-the-art developments and trends in this field of study and will largely cater to the scientific need of scientists engaged in melatonin research across the globe. The book will be unique of its kind and will draw the attention of scientific and research communities engaged in the field of melatonin research. The key features of this book: Authors will address the topics which would provide advances in the understanding of diverse functions of melatonin in plants, encompassing almost all the aspects that have been investigated so far Integrate the overall mechanistic function of melatonin, genomics and proteomics tools, and genetic engineering to manipulate endogenous melatonin levels, thus giving a holistic view of plant-level studies under normal or challenging situations Largely help the readers to design future research programs in exploiting melatonin as a protective agent to develop climate-resilient and pathogen-resistant plants Benefit the crop protection program and ensure food security Chapters will be supplemented with ample illustrations and figures This book will be beneficial to research scholars and Ph.D. students involved in melatonin research and working on stress physiology, stress proteins, genomics, proteomics and genetic engineering in different universities and research institutes all over the world. The book can also be used as an advanced reference book for the coursework of research and master’s level students. It will be of use to people involved in improving plant growth and yield, as well as the performance of plant species in the face of climate change and pathogen infection, using melatonin as the prime protective agent and signaling molecule. Although the book will directly benefit the academic and scientific community, it will also indirectly draw the attention of industries or companies that manufacture or sell chemical products, since the book will highlight in detail the antioxidative potential of melatonin. This will create impetus at the industrial level for the isolation and synthesis of melatonin as a beneficial chemical agent. Applying melatonin as an ameliorating agent against different stresses at the field level will also increase the demand for this chemical among the farmers and will promote large-scale sales and utilization of melatonin for ensuring crop protection and increasing yield.Digitised Health, Medicine and Risk
Par Deborah Lupton. 2017
A prevailing excitement can be discerned in the medical and public health literature and popular media concerning the apparent ‘disruptive’…
or ‘revolutionary’ potential of digital health technologies. Most of the wider social implications are often ignored or glossed over in such accounts. Critical approaches from within the social sciences that take a more measured perspective are important – including those that focus on risk. The contributors to this volume examine various dimensions of risk in the context of digital health. They identify that digital health devices and software offer the ability to configure new forms of risk, in concert with novel responsibilities. The contributions emphasise the sheer volume of detail about very personal and private elements of people’s lives, emotions and bodies that contemporary digital technologies can collect. They show that apps and other internet tools and forums provide opportunities for health and medical risks to be identified, publicised or managed, but also for unvalidated new therapies to be championed. Most of the authors identify the neoliberal ‘soft’ politics of digital health, in which lay people are encouraged (‘nudged’) to engage in practices of identifying and managing health risk in their own interests, and the victim-blaming that may be part of these discourses. This book was originally published as a special issue of Health, Risk and Society.Enzyme-based Biosensors: Recent Advances and Applications in Healthcare

Par Susan Lawrence and Sandra Torres. 2016
With neo-liberal resource rationing, and the onus of cost shifting from the state to individuals, families, and communities, migration issues…
can add a further layer of complexity to the question of caring for the elderly. By presenting examples from a variety of contexts and countries, this book will stimulate readers into considering new approaches to their own local situation in an attempt to find sustainable social work responses, and in helping to build intergenerational solidarity and social capital.Contributions to the book focus on patterns of migration: older migrants, migrating families and migrant carers. Facilitating and supporting social solidarity both locally and internationally requires social workers to understand the different contexts for elderly social work both within their own country, and internationally. Central to this area of work is the promotion of values that respect differences and uphold the principles of human rights and social justice. This book highlights the need to consider migration as a driver for social change, offering the opportunity for new forms of social solidarity that can adapt and support people inter-generationally and sustainably in later life. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Social Work.Women, Children, and Addiction

with a current and comprehensive view of addiction as related to women, pregnancy, newborns, infants and children. The volume begins by placing current attitudes towards addicted women in a historical context, and continues with contributions on the relationship of gender to substance abuse research, addiction as a general health issue in women, and ethical dilemmas faced when approaching drug use during pregnancy. The volume discusses high-risk pregnancies and HIV infection related to maternal drug abuse. It details specific pharmacotherapy such as methadone and buprenorphine, and assesses society’s punitive view toward illicit drug using women. Finally, the book describes outcomes of newborns, infants and children born following intrauterine drug exposure.Health providers in many related disciplines, specialists in Addiction Medicine, social workers and ethicists are among those who will gain insight into the complex interdisciplinary matrix of abuse in women, its unique relationship to pregnancy, and its impact on drug-exposed children. This book was published as a special issue in the Journal of Addictive Diseases.Examining the Relationship between Trauma and Addiction
Par Shelly A. Wiechelt and Shulamith Lala A. Straussner. 2016
Trauma, trauma-related disorders, substance use, and addictive disorders often co-occur, and frequently play a role in the problems and issues…
that social workers contend with in their practice with individuals, families, and communities. Research shows that there is a relationship between trauma-related symptoms and problematic use of substances and other addictive behaviors. Individuals who experience these co-occurring problems have better outcomes when their issues are addressed with integrated treatment approaches. Trauma-informed care and trauma-specific treatment are therefore important components of effective social work interventions. This book examines various types of trauma, such as intergenerational trauma, adverse childhood events, childhood sexual abuse, and minority stress, amongst various populations and settings, including Native Americans, homeless youth, drug court participants, and LGB adolescents. It also explores the challenges in delivering trauma services in outpatient addiction treatment settings. Furthermore, it provides practical information on how to implement trauma-informed approaches in addiction treatment, and offers insights into the experience of a trauma survivor who is also recovering from a substance use disorder. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions.Environmental Gerontology: What Now?
Par Rick J. Scheidt, Benyamin Schwarz. 2013
Environmental gerontology – the research on aging and environment – evolved during the late 1960s, when the domain became a…
relevant topic due to societal concerns with the problems of housing for elderly people. The field proliferated during the 1970s and 1980s, and remains viable and active today on an international scale. However, in recent times, the viability of the field and its future has been brought into question. In this volume, international experts across diverse areas reflect on the current progress of their respective disciplines, illustrating research-grounded benefits emerging from their work, and suggesting new agenda that can guide progress in the future. The contributors address a wide range of issues, including: evaluation of existing paradigms and new theories that might advance both research and training; issues and applications in methods, measures, and empirically-generated research agenda; innovative approaches to environmental transformations in home, community, and long-term care settings; and understudied populations and issues in environmental gerontology. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Housing for the Elderly.Self-Tracking, Health and Medicine: Sociological Perspectives
Par Deborah Lupton. 2018
Self-tracking practices are part of many health and medical domains. The introduction of digital technologies such as smartphones, tablet computers,…
apps, social media platforms, dedicated patient support sites and wireless devices for medical monitoring has contributed to the expansion of opportunities for people to engage in self-tracking of their bodies and health and illness states. The contributors to this book cover a range of self-tracking techniques, contexts and geographical locations: fitness tracking using the wearable Fitbit device in the UK; English adolescent girls’ use of health and fitness apps; stress and recovery monitoring software and devices in a group of healthy Finns; self-monitoring by young Australian illicit drug users; an Italian diabetes self-care program using an app and web-based software; and ‘show-and-tell’ videos uploaded to the Quantified Self website about people’s experiences of self-tracking. Major themes running across the collection include the emphasis on self-responsibility and self-management on which self-tracking rationales and devices tend to rely; the biopedagogical function of self-tracking (teaching people about how to be both healthy and productive biocitizens); and the reproduction of social norms and moral meanings concerning health states and embodiment (good health can be achieved through self-tracking, while illness can be avoided or better managed). This book was originally published as a special issue of the Health Sociology Review.HIV Scale-Up and the Politics of Global Health
Par Nora J. Kenworthy, Richard Parker. 2015
The global expansion of HIV programming (HIV "scale-up") and the growth of global health in the past decade reshaped politics,…
power, civic relations, and citizen subjectivities in countries across the globe. This book draws on interdisciplinary research from numerous sites in the Global South to examine the political dimensions of HIV and global health programming. The chapters reflect extensive methodological diversity and geographic range, yet exhibit striking resonance with the book’s core themes. Collectively, the authors paint a complex global portrait of a unique period in the social history of HIV, as the pandemic enters its fourth decade, and the global response reaches its peak. The book contemplates "scale-up" (and, subsequently, "scale-down") as an object of analysis and an historical shift in the politics of response to global crisis. Ultimately, HIV/AIDS campaigns provide a template for the broader expansion of global health projects and institutions. These transnational shifts and expansions necessitate further critical evaluations across social science and public health disciplines. By collecting diverse perspectives on the political legacies of HIV and global health, this book provides a unique history of the present, cataloguing emerging practices and policies that will have long-term social impacts. This book was originally published as a special issue of Global Public Health.Art, Creativity and Imagination in Social Work Practice.
Par Prue Chamberlayne and Martin Smith. 2009
Harnessing the inspiration available from the arts and the imagination brings to life sensitive and effective social work practice. Workers…
feel most satisfied while service users and communities are more likely to benefit when creative thinking can be applied to practice dilemmas. Drawing on contributions from Canada, England and Utrecht this book illustrates the transforming effect of creatively applied thinking to social problems. The first part of the book considers how use of the self can be enhanced by analytic reflection and application to difficulties facing individuals and communities. The second part shows psychodynamic theory to be a valuable aid when thinking about issues faced by social workers facing threats and accusations, therapeutic work with children and restorative youth justice. The third part of the book considers the implications of working with the arts in community settings – an ex-mining community in North West England, the Tate Gallery in London and the ‘cultural capital’ of Liverpool. Taken as a whole these chapters combine to inspire and provoke thought of how the arts and the imagination can be used creativity to help service users confronted by problems with living and the workers who attempt to get alongside them to think about these. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Social Work Practice.New Directions in Feminism and Human Rights
Par Dana Collins, Sylvanna M. Falcón, Sharmila Lodhia and Molly Talcott. 2011
On the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, feminists are at a critical juncture to re-envision and…
re-engage in a politics of human rights. Interdisciplinary feminist conversations among scholar-activists can both challenge and enrich new directions in feminism and human rights. The scholarly and activist writings that comprise this collection advance both research and critical conversations about feminism and human rights by revealing the transformative potential of a feminist human rights praxis that embraces both critique and collective justice. The editors' method has been to move beyond a wholesale dismissal of human rights so that the book may begin new dialogues that envision transnational, gender and antiracist social justice approaches. This book features work that engages academic critiques of human rights frameworks yet goes further by exploring the potential of human rights activism ‘from below’. These groundbreaking chapters and conversations provide evidence of the persistent challenges and the attendant possibilities inherent in feminist human rights activism and theorizing – they offer this book, underscoring the creative displays of grassroots resistance by women globally and affirming transnational feminist solidarity. This book was published as a special issue of the International Feminist Journal of Politics.
