Par Frances H. Kennedy. 2008
"This will become an indispensable guide to those special places that remind us that every place we think we 'discovered'…
was already someone else's home." --Ken Burns, filmmaker"A highly readable, extremely responsible and brilliant blend of guidebook entries and background essays by the most knowledgeable scholars and writers in the field of American Indian history and culture today. My earlier journeys sure would have been enriched with this wonderful book in the car. It opens up a brand new American experience for the adventuresome vacationer and armchair traveller alike." --Peter Nabokov, author of Where The Lightning Strikes: The Lives of American Indian Sacred Places "American Indian Places is an indispensable guidebook to all of us who share the ancient human landscape of this continent. These are the landmarks of the intertwined histories of American Indians and those who came later. Descriptions of 366 places, written by nearly as many authors, have been gathered together in this remarkable book, which holds special meaning for American Indians." --Dean R. Snow, president of the Society for American Archaeology"Anyone who is interested in the truly beautiful, distinctive, and spiritual places in this country will find this book all but indispensable. It is a precise and comprehensive guide to Native America, the definition of a landscape that is timeless and unique, above all an evocation of the sacred earth." --Scott Momaday, School for Advanced Research —Beyond Broadway Joe: The Super Bowl Team That Changed Football
Par Bob Lederer. 2018
A celebration of the Jets’ 1968 historic Super Bowl team, filled with exclusive insights and stories from the surviving players,…
coaches, and managementIn 1968, Joe Namath, the quarterback of the New York Jets, dominated the headlines as a national celebrity and counterculture figure. The Jets were a vastly talented but underappreciated team that drew constant attention due to Namath, but were not taken seriously by fans. When the Jets earned their way to Super Bowl III to face an eighteen-point favorite Baltimore Colts squad, Namath put all the pressure on himself by shockingly “guaranteeing” a Jets victory. He fulfilled his promise, but knew he didn’t do it alone. As Broadway Joe said in the postgame locker room: “We’ve got the team, brother.”In Beyond Broadway Joe: The Super Bowl TEAM That Changed Football, thirty-six surviving members of that legendary 1968 team share for the first time their funny, poignant, and insightful personal stories about their Super Bowl teammates and coaches, and the historic win that changed football forever. Readers will learn what Namath’s teammates thought about his “guarantee,” find out what Jets coaches discovered on the field early during Super Bowl III that Namath and the defense used to frustrate the Colts, and delight in how the thirty-nine Jets who took the field each week with Namath enabled him to live up to his Super Bowl vow. Author Bob Lederer reviews head coach Weeb Ewbank’s never-before-seen player evaluations—that they didn’t know existed—and provides a rich history of the Jets franchise, from how these thirty-nine forgotten players became Jets, and the road ten of them took to become AFL all-stars in 1968.This definitive review of the entire Jets’ Super Bowl team is a must for every Jets diehard, for fans of the old American Football League, and for all who love the game. The Civil War Battlefield Guide: The Definitive Guide to the 384 Principal Battles
Par Frances H. Kennedy. 1998
This new edition of the definitive guide to Civil War battlefields is really a completely new book. While the first…
edition covered 60 major battlefields, from Fort Sumter to Appomattox, the second covers all of the 384 designated as the "principal battlefields" in the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission Report. As in the first edition, the essays are authoritative and concise, written by such leading historians as James M. McPherson, Stephen W. Sears, Edwin C. Bearss, James I. Robinson, Jr., and Gary W. Gallager. The second edition also features 83 new four-color maps covering the most important battles. The Civil War Battlefield Guide is an essential reference for anyone interested in the Civil War.Although we’ve been conditioned to think “middle-aged” is practically a four-letter word, the realities of women in midlife today are…
far different than what our mothers experienced. Women in their forties, fifties, and even sixties are feeling younger and living more vibrant lives. But influenced by our youth-obsessed culture, we fear that when we hit midlife, we stop being relevant and no longer have options—that it’s simply too late for us. Contradicting long-ingrained beliefs, Robi Ludwig draws on myth-busting data from scientific research and her experience as a therapist to show that midlife is not the beginning of your decline—it is actually a time to pursue your dreams. During midlife, you experience a second adolescence: a time to question authority, take risks, and reinvent yourself. In Your Best Age Is Now, Ludwig offers specific advice on how to change your perception of this life phase and make the best of it in every area of your life:• SELF-IMAGE: Identify the false thinking, stereo-types, and misconceptions that are holding you back.• RELATIONSHIPS: Take charge of your love life—whether married, partnered, or reentering the dating world.• WORK: Stay relevant in the workplace or start a new, exciting career.• HEALTH AND WELLNESS: Let go of stress, cultivate resilience, and create a more balanced life.• SPIRITUALITY: Find meaning and purpose while leading a life of gratitude.Your Best Age Is Now provides the guidance you need to reject the status quo, become more “you” than ever before, and find the kind of happiness you never thought possible.Live Agelessly“A must-read for any woman who fears her prime is in her past. Ludwig’s practical and perspective-changing advice will help you embrace midlife’s unique opportunities and navigate challenges with ease, so you can live your fullest life yet.”—Holly Phillips, M.D., general internist, author of The Exhaustion Breakthrough, and CBS News medical contributor“Every woman needs to read this book. Robi Ludwig will convince you that a youthful mindset, plus new adventures and opportunities and even new or deeper love, are all highly possible, no matter what the number on your birth certificate is.”—Bonnie Fuller, president and editor-in-chief of HollywoodLife.com“Robi Ludwig shows us how to feel ageless, beautiful, and relevant. A superb book that will shift and transform your beliefs about midlife and aging.” —Laura Geller, founder of Laura Geller Beauty and board member of the Cosmetic Executive Women Foundation“In this revolutionary and riveting book, Robi Ludwig brilliantly helps women break through the disabling myths we’ve been fed about midlife. She redefines it, using science and inspiring stories from her practice, empowering us to enjoy this truly fantastic time of life.”—Lisa Bloom, civil rights attorney, legal analyst for NBC News and Avvo.com, and New York Times bestselling author of Think“Robi Ludwig nails it! She makes it clear that midlife is the time for wise, effective women to advance the whole damn species! Robi makes us roar!”—Dr. Wendy Walsh, Emmy-nominated former cohost of The Doctors and CNN commentatorEnvironmental Gerontology: What Now?
Par Rick J. Scheidt, Benyamin Schwarz. 2013
Environmental gerontology – the research on aging and environment – evolved during the late 1960s, when the domain became a…
relevant topic due to societal concerns with the problems of housing for elderly people. The field proliferated during the 1970s and 1980s, and remains viable and active today on an international scale. However, in recent times, the viability of the field and its future has been brought into question. In this volume, international experts across diverse areas reflect on the current progress of their respective disciplines, illustrating research-grounded benefits emerging from their work, and suggesting new agenda that can guide progress in the future. The contributors address a wide range of issues, including: evaluation of existing paradigms and new theories that might advance both research and training; issues and applications in methods, measures, and empirically-generated research agenda; innovative approaches to environmental transformations in home, community, and long-term care settings; and understudied populations and issues in environmental gerontology. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Housing for the Elderly. The Beauty of Dusk: On Vision Lost and Found
Par Frank Bruni. 2022
From New York Times columnist and bestselling author Frank Bruni comes &“a book about vision loss that becomes testimony to…
human courage, a moving memoir that offers perspective, comfort, and hope&” (Booklist, starred review). One morning in late 2017, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni woke up with strangely blurred vision. He wondered at first if some goo or gunk had worked its way into his right eye. But this was no fleeting annoyance, no fixable inconvenience. Overnight, a rare stroke had cut off blood to one of his optic nerves, rendering him functionally blind in that eye—forever. And he soon learned from doctors that the same disorder could ravage his left eye, too. He could lose his sight altogether. In this &“moving and inspiring&” (The Washington Post) memoir, Bruni beautifully recounts his adjustment to this daunting reality, a medical and spiritual odyssey that involved not only reappraising his own priorities but also reaching out to, and gathering wisdom from, longtime friends and new acquaintances who had navigated their own traumas and afflictions. The result is a poignant, probing, and ultimately &“a positive message, a powerful reminder that with great vulnerability also comes great reward&” (Oprah Winfrey). Bruni&’s world blurred in one sense, as he experienced his first real inklings that the day isn&’t forever and that light inexorably fades, but sharpened in another. Confronting unexpected hardship, he felt more blessed than ever before. The Beauty of Dusk is &“a wonderful book. Honest. Poetic. Uplifting.&” (Lesley Stahl).Noninvasive Ventilation Outside Intensive Care Unit: Rationale and Practice (Noninvasive Ventilation. The Essentials)
Par Antonio M. Esquinas, Lucia Spicuzza, Raffaele Scala. 2023
This book aims to highlight the importance of the development of health conditions and demand for the application of noninvasive…
mechanical ventilation (NIMV) outside the intensive care units (ICUs); the diversification of possible scenarios outside the ICUs; the need to establish references that consolidate this phenomenon and the healthcare organizations models. In the last decades the extension of the use of NIMV outside of the ICUs has led to the generation of protocols and to the creation of new in-hospital care models. In this field, the main determining factors are a better knowledge of technique, technological advancement, better monitoring capacity, the creation of multidisciplinary teams adequately trained in their application, and social and health events that have overloaded ICUs. All these elements have promoted the creation of these NIMV units outside ICUs. This new reality entails the need for clarification of concepts, recommendations, and analysis of how to plan NIMV.Although the literature that clearly determine the indications and aids on the use of NIMV is considerable, this volume, pointing out the diversity of different healthcare models to define how to organize NIMV outside the ICUs, shed a light and bring a clear benefit to the scientific community involved. The book is structured in eleven main sections analyzing the epidemiology and trends for NIMV healthcare models and determining factors for these models outside ICUs.The originality of the work, its clear clinical-practical impact and the multidisciplinary approach given by all healthcare professionals involved (intensivists, pneumologists, internal medicine and emergency medicine specialists, geriatricians, chest respiratory therapists, etc.) is very relevant for the thoroughness of the book.Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest, Revised Edition (A Timber Press Field Guide)
