Each book in the True Horse Stories focuses on a contemporary horse from a different part of the world, and…
each animal is, in his or her own way, a hero.PBJ Decks Smokin Gun (Gunner) is an American Paint Horse, one of the many of Heather Lott Goodwin's herd, and a valuable show animal that won the World Championship Paint Horse title. When Hurricane Katrina passed over the Goodwin property, it took with it the fences, the cattle, and several horses. Heather and her family lived in their horse trailer for six weeks and considered themselves lucky to have safe, comfortable shelter. After the storm, they searched for the animals and recovered many of them. But three months passed before they located Gunner, a hundred miles away. They were told he was in terrible shape and should be put down. Nevertheless, Heather drove on washed-out roads to bring him home, starving, dehydrated, and blind in one eye. With the help of a vet and her mother, she nursed him back to health. Amazingly, nine months later, he was well enough to compete again in the World Championship Paint Horse Show. Gunner's story is a testament to love and to determination.Par Anita Sanchez, Chelsea Clinton. 2023

Beyond Audubon: A quirky, &“lively and illuminating&” account of bird-watching&’s history, including &“rivalries, controversies, [and] bad behavior&” (The Washington Post…
Book World). From the moment Europeans arrived in North America, they were awestruck by a continent awash with birds—great flocks of wild pigeons, prairies teeming with grouse, woodlands alive with brilliantly colored songbirds. Of a Feather traces the colorful origins of American birding: the frontier ornithologists who collected eggs between border skirmishes; the society matrons who organized the first effective conservation movement; and the luminaries with checkered pasts, such as Alexander Wilson (a convicted blackmailer) and the endlessly self-mythologizing John James Audubon. Naturalist Scott Weidensaul also recounts the explosive growth of modern birding that began when an awkward schoolteacher named Roger Tory Peterson published A Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. Today, birding counts iPod-wearing teens and obsessive &“listers&” among its tens of millions of participants, making what was once an eccentric hobby into something so completely mainstream it&’s now (almost) cool. This compulsively readable popular history will surely find a roost on every birder&’s shelf. &“Weidensaul is a charming guide. . . . From the author of the New York Times bestseller The Plant Paradox comes a groundbreaking plan for living a long,…
healthy, happy life. From the moment we are born, our cells begin to age. But aging does not have to mean decline. World-renowned surgeon Dr. Steven Gundry has been treating mature patients for most of his career. He knows that everyone thinks they want to live forever, until they hit middle age and witness the suffering of their parents and even their peers. So how do we solve the paradox of wanting to live to a ripe old age—but enjoy the benefits of youth? This groundbreaking book holds the answer. Working with thousands of patients, Dr. Gundry has discovered that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well—one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies. Our gut bugs—the bacteria that make up the microbiome—largely determine our health over the years. From diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age.The good news is, it’s never too late to support these microbes and give them what they need to help them—and you—thrive. In The Longevity Paradox, Dr. Gundry outlines a nutrition and lifestyle plan to support gut health and live well for decades to come. A progressive take on the new science of aging, The Longevity Paradox offers an action plan to prevent and reverse disease as well as simple hacks to help anyone look and feel younger and more vital.Par Marta Williams. 2005

“I am sure Barking Up the Right Tree will be celebrated as the bible of dog training.” — Marc Bekoff,…
PhD, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals and Dogs Demystified When Dr. Ian Dunbar introduced his SIRIUS® Puppy Training in 1982, dog training mostly comprised punishing adult dogs for bad habits and lack of compliance. Dunbar focused on verbally cuing and creatively luring to achieve desirable behavior and using “life rewards” — sniffing, walking, play with dogs, and interactive games — to reinforce speedy compliance and good habits from the outset. His “dog’s point of view” approach revolutionized the field, and today there are few trainers who have not been strongly influenced by it. While positive reinforcement is now widely adopted, this new book details how other reward-training techniques have strayed from Dunbar’s original, quick and easy, highly effective lure-reward approach for teaching dogs ESL, in which we can verbally cue specific responses, offer heartfelt praise for success, and give guidance when dogs err. With Dunbar’s method, we can teach dogs when and where to eliminate, what to chew, when and for how long to bark, and when and how to appropriately let off steam. Barking Up the Right Tree offers proof that aversive punishment seldom works to eliminate undesirable behavior or to get the dog back on track. Dunbar presents numerous nonaversive yet highly effective solutions for misbehavior and noncompliance — simply by using the words you teach, and without even raising your voice. The culmination of fifty-plus years at the vanguard of dog behavioral science, Barking Up the Right Tree is an indispensable guide for anyone who wants harmonious, two-way communication with a calm, confident, well-behaved, happy canine companion.Par Tim Barnett, Laura H. This concise, practical text covers the essential information veterinary students and nurses, new graduates, and practitioners need to succeed in…
equine medicine, focussing on respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases. Written for an international readership, the book conveys the core information in an easily digestible, precise form with extensive use of bullet points, lists, diagrams, protocols, and extensive illustrations (over 300 full-colour, high-quality photographs). Part of a five-book series that extracts and updates key information from Munroe’s Equine Surgery, Reproduction and Medicine, Second Edition, the book distils best practice in a logical straightforward clinically based approach. It details relevant clinical anatomy, physical clinical examination techniques and findings, normal parameters, aetiology/pathophysiology, differential diagnoses, diagnostic techniques, management and treatment, and prognosis. The emphasis is on information tailored to general equine clinicians with just enough on advanced techniques to make the practitioner aware of what is available elsewhere. The respiratory system is split into sections on surgical and medical conditions of the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The gastrointestinal system is divided into the upper tract, including the oral cavity and dentistry, and the lower tract and peritoneal cavity. Ideal for veterinary students and nurses on clinical placements with horses as well as practitioners needing a quick reference ‘on the ground’.Par Kyra Sundance. 2017

Since the age of six, when Orlean wrote and illustrated a book called Herbert the Near-Sighted Pigeon, she&’s been drawn to stories about how we live with animals, and how they abide by us. Now, in On Animals, she examines animal-human relationships through the compelling tales she has written over the course of her celebrated career. These stories consider a range of creatures—the household pets we dote on, the animals we raise to end up as meat on our plates, the creatures who could eat us for dinner, the various tamed and untamed animals we share our planet with who are central to human life. In her own backyard, Orlean discovers the delights of keeping chickens. In a different backyard, in New Jersey, she meets a woman who has twenty-three pet tigers—something none of her neighbors knew about until one of the tigers escapes. In Iceland, the world&’s most famous whale resists the efforts to set him free; in Morocco, the world&’s hardest-working donkeys find respite at a special clinic. We meet a show dog and a lost dog and a pigeon who knows exactly how to get home. Equal parts delightful and profound, enriched by Orlean&’s stylish prose and precise research, these stories celebrate the meaningful cross-species connections that grace our collective existence.
