Par Eliza Hull. 2023
The first major anthology by parents with disabilities. How does a father who is blind take his child to the…
park? How is a mother with dwarfism treated when she walks her child down the street? How do Deaf parents know when their baby cries in the night? When writer and musician Eliza Hull was pregnant with her first child, like most parents-to-be she was a mix of excited and nervous. But as a person with a disability, there were added complexities. She wondered: Will the pregnancy be too hard? Will people judge me? Will I cope with the demands of parenting? More than 15 percent of people worldwide live with a disability, and many of them are also parents. And yet their stories are rarely shared, their experiences almost never reflected in parenting literature. In We’ve Got This, parents around the world who identify as Deaf, disabled, or chronically ill discuss the highs and lows of their parenting journeys and reveal that the greatest obstacles lie in other people’s attitudes. The result is a moving, revelatory, and empowering anthology that tackles ableism head-on. As Rebekah Taussig writes, ‘Parenthood can tangle with grief and loss. Disability can include joy and abundance. And goddammit — disabled parents exist.’Letters with Smokie: Blindness and More-than-Human Relations

Par Zarine L. Rocha, Kathy L. Davidson. 2023
This is the first volume to explore clinical and applied sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand, while also providing unique insights…
into the practice of sociology internationally. Drawing out the intersections between sociological research, public sociology and applied sociology, the chapters in this volume enrich the rapidly growing field of international clinical sociology. Aotearoa New Zealand presents an important case study in the development and practice of sociology: with a vibrant social scientific community and a significant diversity of scholars and practitioners, local research and practice highlight the country’s innovative and often unusual approaches to addressing social problems. This volume brings together a diversity of scholars and practitioners, from the country’s top sociologists to early career researchers, and provides a comprehensive and valuable exploration of sociology and its many practical applications in this unique context. It covers a wide range of key topics in the field, from the challenges of practicing a public sociology in Aotearoa New Zealand to the role of applied and clinical sociologists in government and consultancies. Contemporary social issues are explored as case studies, including practising sociological psychotherapy; indigenous applications of sociology and Māori language learning; and applying sociology within healthcare. This is a key addition to applied and clinical sociology literature. This book provides up-to-date guidance on how to recognize and reduce trauma-based dissociation. Through a therapist-guided approach, readers will increase…
their awareness of their own experiences of dissociation and develop strategies for reducing these responses, with an overall goal of feeling more connected within themselves and with others. Trauma-based dissociation usually first occurs during a very threatening situation from which there is no physical escape. The dissociative response happens automatically for protection outside of awareness, so the person doesn’t realize what they were doing. This protective response can happen again when other concerning situations occur, and eventually develop into an automatic response to perceived threats. Disconnecting to Survive: Understanding and Recovering from Trauma-based Dissociation is a guide for individuals who experience dissociation or wonder if they do, and for their family, friends, and professionals who want to help them. Several unique features of this book make it valuable as a therapeutic experience for trauma survivors as well as a useful resource for professionals. "Check-ins” throughout the book provide an in-the-moment experience of self-monitoring and pacing while reading. Frequent case examples enhance understanding of the ideas described and validate the experiences of readers who have persevered through traumatic life situations. A section at the end of each chapter provides opportunity to explore how the concepts apply to the reader. Readers also will learn about a three-phase model for determining their present needs and their readiness for different interventions based on their phase of trauma recovery. In addition to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, other types of interpersonal trauma are delineated, including race-based trauma, religious trauma, medical trauma, emotional neglect, military-related trauma, and mistreatment due to sexual orientation. In addition, a chapter is devoted to each of the important topics of dissociation in children and the relationship between trauma, dissociation, and psychosis.Food Texturology: Measurement and Perception of Food Textural Properties
Par Andrew Rosenthal, Jianshe Chen. 2024
The concept behind this book is to take a holistic view of food texture, starting with the determination of food…
texture, its perception in the mouth, and its measurement by both sensory and instrumental methods, and to examine the relation between them. The book has been divided into four sections: Fundamentals, Sensory and Human Interactions, Instrumental Analysis, and Food Products. Essentially we cover the techniques used for measuring food texture, and then apply them to the different product groups. Readers of the first edition will notice the title has changed, with the adoption of the term texturology. In the long history of food texture research, texturology has been occasionally used in literature. The term texturology has not been widely accepted by texture researchers (texturologists) because of their concern over whether the theories and techniques are broad and strong enough to support texture research as a scientific discipline. During the 24 years since the publication of the first edition, the editors have observed vast developments in theories as well as the assessment methodology of food texture (both sensory and instrumental) and these have shaped our understanding. This second edition brings the science up to date by introducing topics not previously covered (e.g. psychophysics, tribology, oral processing, texture maps and special foods for dysphagia patients). It includes an exposé of the instruments to measure food texture, and also considers techniques for measuring consumer perception of food texture (in addition to the sensory properties). Additionally, it amends omissions from the first edition such as dairy products; fish; bakery products; and, sugar confectionery, asproduct groups. All in all it is expanded and updated in its coverage of food texturology, as a coherent scientific discipline.Angelika Kutz LL.M. beschreibt, wieso die Systemik mit der Systemische Haltung so heil- und wirksam ist für die nötigen Anpassungen…

well as providing methodological, practical and ethical issues related to the development of biomarkers. Biomarkers have revolutionized clinical research and practice in most fields of medicine, but psychiatry has lagged behind. However, in the last decade, there has been a growing expectation that biomarkers will advance and, ultimately, reframe psychiatry research and practice. Biomarkers might inform about diagnosis, therapeutics, prognosis, contributing to a ‘personalized medicine’. Understanding their meaning, possibilities and limitations will help clinicians, researchers and students in the related areas navigate and excel in the challenging and ever changing field of neuropsychiatric disorders.FND Stories: Personal and Professional Experiences of Functional Neurological Disorder

Par Mohammed R. Milad, Seth D. Norrholm. 2023
This book aims to provide the reader a neuroscientific understanding surrounding a very simple question: how do we learn not…
to fear? Exploring answers to this question is very important for two reasons. First, learning about the neural mechanisms of fear extinction is of relevance to everyone’s life - it is such a basic yet relevant question to our daily experiences. Therefore, understanding brain mechanisms of fear and its regulation is essential from a basic neuroscience point of view. Second, excessive fear and the inability to regulate its expression is one of the hallmarks of fear-, anxiety-, trauma-, and stressor-related psychopathologies. And as such, learning about how fear is acquired, stored, expressed, and regulated could help advance our understanding of the etiology of psychopathology, the maintenance of symptoms pertaining to failure to regulate fear, and could help us develop novel therapeutics to equip providers and patients with the tools to better quell their fears. The contributions contained in this book are provided by experts in the fields of basic and clinical neuroscience, experimental and clinical psychology, and neuropsychiatry. The contributions are organized to start the reader with basic definitions of how we define fear, how we study its neural circuits at the molecular and cellular levels, how to study human behavior and the brain using state-of-the art experimental and statistical tools, to how much fear contributes to psychopathology. This volume ends with current advances aimed to enhance the capacity to extinguish fear; a clinical result that would aid in the treatment of multiple psychiatric disorders, followed by a discussion on future directions of this highly important and relevant field.Therapeutisches Erzählen lernen: Das Wichtigste im Überblick (Psychotherapie: Praxis)

childhood and, ultimately, through adulthood and old age. The processes of development are affected both by the environment and by our genetic makeup in complex and interesting ways. The development of our ultimate ways of thinking, socializing, and feeling results from the world we encounter as we move through life.
