Par Joe Hollyfield, Robert Anderson, Christian Grimm, John Ash, Catherine Rickman, Matthew LaVail. 2018
The blinding diseases of inherited retinal degenerations have no treatments, and age-related macular degeneration has no cures, despite the fact…
that it is an epidemic among the elderly, with 1 in 3-4 affected by the age of 70. The RD Symposium will focus on the exciting new developments aimed at understanding these diseases and providing therapies for them. Since most major scientists in the field of retinal degenerations attend the biennial RD Symposia, they are known by most as the “best” and “most important” meetings in the field. The volume will present representative state-of-the-art research in almost all areas of retinal degenerations, ranging from cytopathologic, physiologic, diagnostic and clinical aspects; animal models; mechanisms of cell death; candidate genes, cloning, mapping and other aspects of molecular genetics; and developing potential therapeutic measures such as gene therapy and neuroprotective agents for potential pharmaceutical therapy. While advances in these areas of retinal degenerations will be described, there will be many new topics that either were in their infancy or did not exist at the time of the last RD Symposium, RD2014. These include the role of inflammation and immunity, as well as other basic mechanisms, in age-related macular degeneration, several new aspects of gene therapy, and revolutionary new imaging and functional testing that will have a huge impact on the diagnosis and following the course of retinal degenerations, as well as to provide new quantitative endpoints for clinical trials. The retina is an approachable part of the central nervous system (CNS), and there is a major interest in neuroprotective and gene therapy for CNS diseases and neurodegenerations, in general. It should be noted that with successful and exciting initial clinical trials in neuroprotective and gene therapy, including the restoration of sight in blind children, the retinal degeneration therapies are leading the way towards new therapeutic measures for neurodegenerations of the CNS. Many of the successes recently reported in these areas of retinal degeneration sprang from collaborations established at previous RD Symposia, and many of those will be reported at the RD2018 meeting and included in the proposed volume. We anticipate the excitement of those working in the field and those afflicted with retinal degenerations will be reflected in the volume.Corneal Regenerative Medicine: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology #1014)
Par Che Connon, Bernice Wright. 2013
Continuous regeneration of the cornea is necessary to maintain this tissue in the transparent state that is essential for vision.…
Therapy for repair of the damaged anterior cornea is currently addressed through the transplantation of donor corneas or the delivery of limbal epithelial stem cells (LESC) to the ocular surface using amniotic membrane (AM) as a supporting scaffold. Research on the bioengineering of corneal equivalents as replacement tissue is underway to develop viable corneal prosthetics. Corneal Regenerative Medicine: Methods and Protocols provides a concise overview of essential techniques in the field of corneal regenerative medicine, highlighting novel strategies to guide the management of key therapies within this area of medicine. Divided into four convenient sections, topics include the identification, characterisation and cultivation of LESC, as well as the investigation of biopolymers used as the basis for corneal substitutes. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Corneal Regenerative Medicine: Methods and Protocols covers the fundamental techniques useful for both the laboratory and clinical settings.Age-Related Changes of the Human Eye (Aging Medicine)

Par Mohammad Ali. 2015
This second edition of the highly successful and comprehensive text on lacrimal disorders presents the latest developments in this rapidly…
evolving field. The new edition includes six new chapters, additional photographs and all chapters now have a separate section on recent advances.Written by experts in the field of dacryology, this book is a practical guide to evaluating and managing patients with lacrimal disorders. It methodically discusses basic anatomy and underlying pathology, patient evaluation, and all surgical procedures currently used to manage such disorders. It thoroughly yet concisely reviews surgical modalities including the endoscopic and micro-endoscopic approaches and provides ample illustrations for a better understanding. Since familiarity with a surgical technique is incomplete without the knowledge of risk factors and red flags, the text highlights ways of dealing with surgical complications and failure. Further it discusses in detail controversial topics and treatment dilemmas and reviews the current consensus among the experts. This is an up-to-date reference work for dacryologists, oculoplastic surgeons, general ophthalmologists as well as fellows in training.Clinical Strategies in the Management of Diabetic Retinopathy: A Step-by-Step Guide for Ophthalmologists

Par Jayvadan Patel, Vijaykumar Sutariya, Jagat Kanwar, Yashwant Pathak. 2018
This book addresses the issues relating to a wide variety of ocular diseases from which millions of people suffer. Long-term…
challenges include visual impairment and ocular blindness. Certain ocular diseases are quite rare, whereas others, such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and glaucoma, are very common, especially in the aging population. A rapid expansion of new technologies in ocular drug delivery and new drug candidates, including biologics, to treat these challenging diseases in the retina and posterior segments of the eye have recently emerged. These approaches are necessary because the eye has many unique barriers to drug delivery. Thus, this timely reference Drug Delivery for the Retina and Posterior Segment Disease compiles and analyzes recent advances in the research and development of drug delivery systems for retina and posterior segment diseases of the eye, with an emphasis on the use of implantable devices, iontophoresis as well as micro- and nanoparticles.Retinal Prosthesis: A Clinical Guide to Successful Implementation (Essentials in Ophthalmology)

Par Lars. 2018
Sub- or preretinal hemorrhage involving the macula is a typical complication in a variety of ocular diseases, including age-related macular…
degeneration, arterial macroaneurysm, Valsalva retinopathy, and trauma. However, there is currently no consensus regarding the ideal treatment for macular hemorrhage. The purpose of this book on macular hemorrhage is twofold: it aims both to impart valuable information on pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic aspects, and prognostic criteria under different conditions and to provide a systematic overview of therapeutic approaches that cover the most important situations a vitreoretinal surgeon might encounter when treating patients with this disorder. Case presentations, clinical photographs, and an extensive review of the literature supplement the important information on clinical decision making, surgical techniques, and typical pitfalls and invite the reader to explore the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to the management of macular hemorrhage.
