Par Antonio L. Ellis, Nicholas D. Hartlep, Gloria Ladson-Billings, David O. Stovall. 2021
Breaking away from the historically dominant narrative that White females make the best teachers, this book contends that effective teachers…
can be both "windows" and "mirrors" for students. Teachers should reflect the student population in racial and cultural terms while also serving as windows for students to see opportunities that lie outside of their immediate circumstances. Employing a critical storytelling framework, respected scholars share the teaching practices of influential teachers that they learned from. Chapter authors are diverse teacher educators from the fields of education, educational psychology, administration, policy, and curriculum and instruction. Each storyteller identifies key concepts and principles that explain why the selected teacher was so memorably effective. This inspirational volume provides a series of templates that help pinpoint the attitudes and behaviors of those teachers who make a positive difference in the lives of their students. Book Features: - Highlights contributions from diverse teacher educators, including Asian American, African American, Latinx, and Native American. - Examines the long-lasting impact that a teacher's race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity can have on the lives of their students beyond high school and college. - Includes analyses drawn from research on identity in teacher education, theory, and research in education, psychology, and human development. - Contains photographs, images, charts, and diagrams to assist readers. The Past as Text: The Theory and Practice of Medieval Historiography
Par Gabrielle M. Spiegel. 1997
This study of familiar medieval histories and chronicles argues that the historian should be aware of the discursive nature, literary…
modes, and ideological investments of such texts as well as the social circumstances to which they were applied and by which they were generated. Postmodernism has challenged historians to look at historical texts in a new way and to be skeptical of the claim that one can confidently retrieve "fact" from historical writings. In The Past as Text historian Gabrielle M. Spiegel sets out to read medieval histories and chronicles in light of the critical-theoretical problems raised by postmodernism. At the same time, she urges a method of analysis that enables the reader to recognize these texts simultaneously as artifice and as works deeply embedded in a historically determinate, knowable social world. Beginning with a theoretical basis for the study of medieval historiography, Spiegel demonstrates her theory in practice, offering readings of medieval histories and chronicles as literary, social, and political constructions. The study insightfully concludes that historians should be equally aware of the discursive nature, literary modes, and ideological investments of such texts and the social circumstances to which they were applied and by which they were generated. Arguing for the "social logic of the text," Spiegel provides historians with a way to retrieve the social significance and conceptual claims produced by these medieval or any historical writings. The Pilot Factor: A Fresh Look Into Crew Resource Management

Par Hanna Levenson. 1995
Ten years ago, Hans Strupp and Jeffrey Binder’s Psychotherapy in a New Key introduced a powerful, empirically tested model of…
brief psychotherapy that has proven highly successful and changed the practice of psychotherapy forever. But until now, there has been no follow-up publication to make the model come alive. With this book, Hanna Levenson draws on her extensive experience with time-limited dynamic psychotherapy to let readers see the therapy in action. In this era of managed care and limited insurance reimbursement for therapy, many clients are receiving brief therapy treatment. can therapists adjust to these new pressures for efficiency without feeling as if they have to choose between good therapy and brief therapy? This flexible approach to brief therapy is designed to treat people with long-standing dysfunctional relationships. This book emphasizes identification of interpersonal difficulties and teaches a method of focusing therapy that is behaviorally based and explicit. In a highly original approach, Levenson presents detailed transcripts not only of model cases but also for students discussing those cases with her, taken from a videotape of her class. Par Erika Lee, Judy Yung. 2010
From 1910 to 1940, over half a million people sailed through the Golden Gate, hoping to start a new life…
in America. But they did not all disembark in San Francisco; instead, most were ferried across the bay to the Angel Island Immigration Station. For many, this was the real gateway to the United States. For others, it was a prison and their final destination, before being sent home. In this landmark book, historians Erika Lee and Judy Yung (both descendants of immigrants detained on the island) provide the first comprehensive history of the Angel Island Immigration Station. Drawing on extensive new research, including immigration records, oral histories, and inscriptions on the barrack walls, the authors produce a sweeping yet intensely personal history of Chinese "paper sons," Japanese picture brides, Korean students, South Asian political activists, Russian and Jewish refugees, Mexican families, Filipino repatriates, and many others from around the world. Their experiences on Angel Island reveal how America's discriminatory immigration policies changed the lives of immigrants and transformed the nation. A place of heartrending history and breathtaking beauty, the Angel Island Immigration Station is a National Historic Landmark, and like Ellis Island, it is recognized as one of the most important sites where America's immigration history was made. This fascinating history is ultimately about America itself and its complicated relationship to immigration, a story that continues today. Winner of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association Award for Adult Non-Fiction Winner of the Western History Association Caughey Prize. The Beet Queen: A Novel

Par David Igler. 2013
The Pacific of the early eighteenth century was not a single ocean but a vast and varied waterscape, a place…
of baffling complexity, with 25,000 islands and seemingly endless continental shorelines. But with the voyages of Captain James Cook, global attention turned to the Pacific, and European and American dreams of scientific exploration, trade, and empire grew dramatically. By the time of the California gold rush, the Pacific's many shores were fully integrated into world markets and world consciousness. The Great Ocean draws on hundreds of documented voyages--some painstakingly recorded by participants, some only known by archeological remains or indigenous memory--as a window into the commercial, cultural, and ecological upheavals following Cook's exploits, focusing in particular on the eastern Pacific in the decades between the 1770s and the 1840s. Beginning with the expansion of trade as seen via the travels of William Shaler, captain of the American Brig Lelia Byrd, historian David Igler uncovers a world where voyagers, traders, hunters, and native peoples met one another in episodes often marked by violence and tragedy. Igler describes how indigenous communities struggled against introduced diseases that cut through the heart of their communities; how the ordeal of Russian Timofei Tarakanov typified the common practice of taking hostages and prisoners; how Mary Brewster witnessed first-hand the bloody "great hunt" that decimated otters, seals, and whales; how Adelbert von Chamisso scoured the region, carefully compiling his notes on natural history; and how James Dwight Dana rivaled Charles Darwin in his pursuit of knowledge on a global scale. These stories--and the historical themes that tie them together--offer a fresh perspective on the oceanic worlds of the eastern Pacific. Ambitious and broadly conceived, The Great Ocean is the first book to weave together American, oceanic, and world history in a path-breaking portrait of the Pacific world.Truth and Knowledge: Prelude to a Philosophy of Freedom

Par Jennifer E. Lansford, Doran C. French, Mary Gauvain. 2021
Human development doesn’t occur in a vacuum. Rather, it is deeply rooted in, and affected by, culture. This textbook examines…
how culture affects several domains of development, including cognition, emotion, sociolinguistics, peer relationships, family relationships, and more. The chapters highlight differences between “WEIRD” cultures (Western, educated, and from industrialized, rich, and democratic countries) and non-WEIRD cultures, as well as differences with respect to gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other identity markers. Each chapter draws upon a large research base and highlights specific studies to engage students, illustrate key points, and convey the role of empirical research in psychology. As a result, students will learn that the development of behavior, values, social relationships, ways of seeing the world, language, and thought processes cannot be understood separate from culture.Beyond the Binary: Thinking about Sex and Gender

Par Susan Strange. 2016
Originally released by Basil Blackwell in 1986 and then re-released by Manchester University Press in 1998, Casino capitalism is a…
cutting-edge discussion of international financial markets, how they behave, and their power. It examines money's power for good as well as its terrible disruptive, destructive power for evil. Money is seen as being far too important to leave to bankers and economists to do with as they think best. The raison d'être of Casino capitalism is to expose the development of a financial system that has increasingly escaped the calming influences of democratic control. This new edition includes a powerful new introduction provided by Matthew Watson that puts the book it in its proper historical context, as well as identifying its relevance for the modern world. It will have a wide reaching audience, appealing both to academics and students of economics and globalization as well as the general reader with interests in capitalism and economic history.Crossing Into America: The New Literature of Immigration
Par Louis Mendoza, S. Shankar. 2003
This outstanding collection captures the diverse voices of the new literature of American immigration. Bringing together beautiful writing from celebrated…
authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Jamaica Kincaid, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Chang-Rae Lee, Crossing into America fills the literary void in public discussion about immigration. Since the immigration reforms of 1965 removed many of the racial barriers in American immigration laws, a new wave of immigrants has visibly transformed a society that has long prided itself on being a nation of immigrants. Crossing into America includes stories and memoirs of writers born in Mexico, Kashmir, the Philippines, South Africa, and Romania, as well as poignant reflections on the immigrant experience by the children of immigrants. This book follows these newest arrivals--from their home countries through their engagement with America--and also includes an accessible history of immigration policy, cartoons, newspaper stories, and a section of conversations with activists, journalists, and scholars working on the front lines of our immigration battles.Pathways: Reading, Writing, And Critical Thinking 3
