Par F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Parini, Ruth Prigozy. 1998
Introduction by Hortense Calisher Commentary by Edmund Wilson, Henry Seidel Canby, and Arthur Mizener Fitzgerald's second novel, a devastating portrait…
of the excesses of the Jazz Age, is a largely autobiographical depiction of a glamorous, reckless Manhattan couple and their spectacular spiral into tragedy. Published on the heels of This Side of Paradise, the story of the Harvard-educated aesthete Anthony Patch and his willful wife, Gloria, is propelled by Fitzgerald's intense romantic imagination and demonstrates an increased technical and emotional maturity. The Beautiful and Damned is at once a gripping morality tale, a rueful meditation on love, marriage, and money, and an acute social document. As Hortense Calisher observes in her Introduction, "Though Fitzgerald can entrance with stories so joyfully youthful they appear to be safe--when he cuts himself, you will bleed."Includes a Modern Library Reading Group GuideThe History of Tom Jones

By Thomas Burke.
Thomas Burke paints an enduring portrait of London’s East End At the beginning of the twentieth century, the East End…
of London was a filthy and violent neighborhood, a place where a man was more likely to get a knife in his stomach than a good dinner. It was worlds away from the fashionable district it has become more than a century later. In this gripping collection of stories, author Thomas Burke traverses the area and offers glimpses of life in Limehouse. One tale portrays the unusual friendship that develops between an immigrant and a girl who has recently been beaten by her father. Another follows a down-on-his-luck boxer looking for one last chance. In all of the pieces, Burke displays the beauty inherent in humanity, no matter the squalor in which it resides. Par Wilkie Collins. 2012
A romance of the fifth century, in which many of the scenes described in the 'Decline and Fall of the…
Roman Empire ' are reset to suit the purpose of the author. Only two historical personages are introduced into the story,-- the Emperor Honorius, and Alaric the Goth; and these attain only a secondary importance. Among the historical incidents used are the arrival of the Goths at the gates of Rome, the Famine, the last efforts of the besieged, the Treaty of Peace, the introduction of the Dragon of Brass, and the collection of the ransom,-- most of these accounts being founded on the chronicles of Zosimus. This book does not show the intricacy of plot and clever construction of the author's modern society stories; but it is full of action, vivid in color, and sufficiently close to history to convey a dramatic sense of the Rome of Honorius and the closing-in of the barbarians.War and Peace: With bonus material from Give War and Peace A Chance by Andrew D. story about the world's most famous vampire.A true masterwork of storytelling, Dracula has transcended generation, language, and culture to become one of the most popular novels ever written. It is a quintessential tale of suspense and horror, boasting one of the most terrifying characters ever born in literature: Count Dracula, a tragic, night-dwelling specter who feeds upon the blood of the living, and whose diabolical passions prey upon the innocent, the helpless, and the beautiful. But Dracula also stands as a bleak allegorical saga of an eternally cursed being whose nocturnal atrocities reflect the dark underside of the supremely moralistic age in which it was originally written--and the corrupt desires that continue to plague the modern human condition.Babylon Revisited: And Other Stories

Par Nathaniel Hawthorne, Michael J. Colacurcio. 1987
The short fiction of a writer who helped to shape the course of American literature. With a determined commitment to…
the history of his native land, Nathaniel Hawthorne revealed, more incisively than any writer of his generation, the nature of a distinctly American consciousness. The pieces collected here deal with essentially American matters: the Puritan past, the Indians, the Revolution. But Hawthorne was highly - often wickedly - unorthodox in his account of life in early America, and his precisely constructed plots quickly engage the reader's imagination. Written in the 1820s, 30s, and 40s, these works are informed by themes that reappear in Hawthorne's longer works: The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance. And, as Michael J. Colacurcio points out in his excellent introduction, they are themes that are now deeply embedded in the American literary tradition. .The Last Musketeer (Last Musketeer #1)

Par Deborah Mcdowell, Pauline Hopkins. 2004
Of One Blood is the last of four novels written by Pauline Hopkins. She is considered by some to be…
"the most prolific African-American woman writer and the most influential literary editor of the first decade of the twentieth century, though she is one of the lesser known literary figures of the much lauded Harlem Renaissance. Of One Blood first appeared in serial form in Colored American Magazine in the November and December 1902 and the January 1903 issues of the publication, during the four-year period that Hopkins served as its editor. Hopkins tells the story of Reuel Briggs, a medical student who couldn't care less about being black and appreciating African history, but finds himself in Ethiopia on an archeological trip. His motive is to raid the country of lost treasures -- which he does find in the ancient land. However, he discovers much more than he bargained for: the painful truth about blood, race, and the half of his history that was never told. Hopkins wrote the novel intending, in her own words, to "raise the stigma of degradation from [the Black] race." The title, Of One Blood, refers to the biological kinship of all human beings.Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: New Edition - Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
