Geriatric psychiatry is a relatively young discipline within the field of North American psychiatry. The development of a workforce to…
meet the needs of an aging population has been identified as an urgent priority, but there is still much we don’t know about fulfilling the mental health needs of older adults. For Mark J. Rapoport, geriatric psychiatrists must assess and treat patients today in face of the limitations of what we know, but also be armed with enthusiasm to create novel ways of impacting on the quality of life of older patients with mental illness. The chapters in this book include case scenarios, concise point-form summaries of diagnostic and treatment approaches, up-to-date evidence syntheses, discussions of controversies, and a series of practical and thought-provoking questions and answers. Faces of Aging: The Lived Experiences of the Elderly in Japan
Par Yoshiko Matsumoto. 2011
The indisputable fact of Japan's rapidly aging population has been known for some time. But beyond statistics and implications for…
the future, we do not know much about the actual aging process. Senior citizens and their varied experiences have, for the most part, been obscured by stereotypes. This fascinating new collection of research on the elderly works to put a human face on aging by considering multiple dimensions of the aging experience in Japan. Faces of Aging foregrounds a spectrum of elder-centered issues-social activity, caregiving, generational bias, suicide, sexuality, and communication with medical professionals, to name a few-from the perspective of those who are living them. The volume's diverse contributors represent the fields of sociology, anthropology, medicine, nursing, gerontology, psychology, film studies, gender studies, communication, and linguistics, offering a diverse selection of qualitative studies of aging to researchers across the social sciences.Essays on Saving, Bequests, Altruism and Life-cycle Planning
Par Laurence J. Kotlikoff. 2001
This collection of essays, coauthored with other distinguished economists, offers new perspectives on saving, intergenerational economic ties, retirement planning, and…
the distribution of wealth. The book links life-cycle microeconomic behavior to important macroeconomic outcomes, including the roughly 50 percent postwar decline in America's rate of saving and its increasing wealth inequality. The book traces these outcomes to the government's five-decade-long policy of transferring, in the form of annuities, ever larger sums from young savers to old spenders. The book presents new theoretical and empirical analyses of altruism that rule out the possibility that private intergenerational transfers have offset those by the government. While rational life-cycle behavior can explain broad economic outcomes, the book also shows that a significant minority of households fail to make coherent life-cycle saving and insurance decisions. These mistakes are compounded by reliance on conventional financial planning tools, which the book compares with Economic Security Planner (ESPlanner), a new life-cycle financial planning software program. The application of ESPlannerto U. S. data indicates that most Americans approaching retirement age are saving at much lower rates than they should be, given potential major cuts in Social Security benefits.Embracing Touch in Dementia Care: A Person-Centred Approach to Touch and Relationships
Par Luke Tanner, Danuta Lipinska. 2017
Meaningful touch is an essential part of truly person-centred dementia care, yet its value is often viewed as secondary to…
its perceived risks. This book restores trust in the power of touch, demonstrating the vital role it plays in supporting personhood, relationships and wellbeing, and challenging the barriers preventing staff from using touch in meaningful ways. Using many examples from practice, Luke Tanner demonstrates that touch and other forms of non-verbal communication are essential for 'being with' and not just 'doing to' people living with a dementia, and explains how and when to use touch effectively in everyday interactions, and in all stages of dementia. He places touch in the context of consent and safeguarding, whilst emphasising the need for positive attitudes to touch to be at the heart of care cultures. Offering perspectives, ideas, training exercises and culture change actions to maximise the benefits of touch in dementia care settings, this practical guide will enable practitioners to reflect on their own use of touch and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to place meaningful touch at the heart of their work.Stem Cell Aging: Mechanisms, Consequences, Rejuvenation
Par Hartmut Geiger, Heinrich Jasper, Maria Carolina Florian. 2015
Aging of somatic stem cells reduces cell function and results in dysfunctional organs and tissues, making it an underlying cause…
of diseases associated with aging. It might even be the primary cause for age-associated attrition of tissue function in organs that heavily rely on stem cells for maintaining homeostasis, like the skin, blood and intestines. Understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved is critical for developing approaches to attenuate stem cell aging and could pave the way for improved quality of life among the elderly. Written by highly prominent experts in the field, this book presents the current state of knowledge on these mechanisms. It offers insights into stem cell function, explains in detail the mechanisms of stem cell aging in model organisms as well as mammalian systems and describes related diseases and approaches to attenuating stem cell aging or achieving rejuvenation. The book is intended for all scientists and clinicians working with stem cells, aging mechanisms or age-related diseases.Lessons for the Living: Stories of Forgiveness, Gratitude, and Courage at the End of Life
Par Stan Goldberg. 2009
When Stan Goldberg was diagnosed with cancer, he chose to face his fear by helping others who were already in…
the process of dying: Stan signed up as a hospice volunteer and spent several years at the bedsides of the terminally ill. In this book, Stan shares the remarkable stories of people he met who were facing the end of life. Their stories shine a light on the human capacity for beauty, insight, forgiveness, and gratitude, as we see how people like us deal with anxiety and sadness with bravery and love. But what's especially remarkable is that the bravery and love aren't as much expressed in grand, dramatic gestures as they are in ordinary acts and small accomplishments: in simple efforts at kindness, in asking for and receiving forgiveness, in the abandonment of anger, and in learning to speak directly from the heart--and to listen in the same way. What Stan ultimately discovers--and shares here--are not lessons in dying, but rather, lessons in learning how to live.Demographischer Wandel in Unternehmen

Par Irene Borins Ash, Irv Ash. 2008
Through the inspirational, wise, and informative stories of the residents, either in their own words or based on interviews, and…
environmental photographs of each, this book focuses on various residents of long-term care facilities and especially on the positive facets of their life, their thoughts, and their feelings. The only issue that reaches the media about nursing homes is the negative and unfortunate events that sometimes occur, but there is so much more to the story. Most people are afraid of long-term care homes because they recognize that it is the last phase in their life - it is the step before death. But some people have years from the time they enter the home until they die. This book shows how many men and women make the best of their situation - often leaving a positive legacy for family and friends - and how these can be fulfilling and quality years. The Transitions of Aging
Par Suchit Arora. 2015
This book explores the unresolved paradox at the heart of population aging, namely how to account for the fact that…
death rates from most non-communicable diseases rise as people age, yet aggregate death rates from such diseases have decreased overall despite an increasingly aging population. It provides a long-term historical perspective on this issue, presenting evidence that the underpinnings of modern aging extend as far back as the nineteenth century, and that aging has boosted per capita healthcare spending. The book first outlines the three eras of the Epidemiologic Transition, taking readers from its first stage where the threat of infectious diseases loom large, through the transitional stage, and on to the modern era, where non-communicable diseases are the primary cause of death. Next, the book examines the age-profiles of people whose childhoods coincide with the different stages of the Epidemiologic Transition. Using data from England and Wales, one of the few places that have recorded the data necessary for such an exploration, the book resolves the aging paradox by studying hidden generational change. It traverses historical time and identifies the distinct socio-economic and epidemiologic childhood conditions that may appear in it. It then compares, for instance, aging of children brought up in an earlier epidemiologic stage with aging of ones raised in a modern one. In the process, it explores the influence of childhood development on aging. Overall, the book has a quantitative bent, engaging the reader with analytical issues that will help develop a deeper understanding of modern aging.Parenting Your Parents: Straight Talk About Aging in the Family
